Selective desaturation is one way you can lead the viewers eye to your subject. Done wrong it looks kind of hokey... Done right it can make a picture pop.

I think moodvilles' example is cooler.

And duckius plasticius are very elusive. Moodville was lucky to capture him at such close range.

Argh ... this would be my own 'personal' version of 'hell'! You'd all be damn certain not to receive a vote from me :-)

Moodville & Faidoi:

Throw all your moody, de-saturated stuff my way! I can't do it yet (which will keep me popular here lol), but I love it (which will lead to further unpopularity). I always seem to like darker images than anyone else . . . . what does that say about me????

Hey, nobody mentioned my selective desat! ::sniff sniff:: I'm just kidding. The ones from Faidoi and Moodville are much better than the one I did for a free study.

This one?

This was captured without desat correct?

Faidoi, you are correct. The fire extinguisher entry was full color with auto color correction. Just don't look too closely at the roses in my free study entry as you'll see the chromatic abberation. :)

Might be a good challenge. I wouldn't mind doing one of these again:

I'm not sure what e301's reasoning is but count me out of a challenge like this. There is no way I would vote on it either. I'm not sure italics are enough to emphasize how much I really dislike this technique. No offense, of course. To each his own. It just seems hokey to me, no matter how skillfuly it's done. I have yet to see a photo I wouldn't have liked better if it had not been treated with this technique. I call it gilding the lily. If your subject isn't compelling enough to draw the eye than my suggestion is to spend more time composing the image so you have less time spent in tarting it up in Photoshop.

I think I've only done this once:

...and haven't done it since. I think.
