The thing is though, You can buy books with lighting set-ups and tips in them for 20-30 dollars. Books writen by photographers with more years experience than Joey. The thing that stands out to me, Is he is not the only person shooting that style of photographs, There are 100's of photographers out there doing the same exact thing, The only difference is Joey is a DPC'er So alot of people here on DPC know who he is. Step outside and ask your neighbor if he has heard of Joey Lawrence and the anwser will more than likely be NO!! Or they will say oh yeah isn't he that cute little kid from the TV shows "Gimme a Break" and "Blossom"? His work is impressive, but it was done on many album covers and magazines long before he ever touched a camera. So what he is showing you in his DVD's is nothing new or untold. However it is him telling you how he does things which are not too far off from how the other 100's before him did it as well.
Originally posted by bassbone: We can debate the price point of this all we want, but in reality, it comes down to what Joey and his business people feel is the right price. My guess is they did marketing around the price and found this was a 'fair' price, meaning that they will get the return on their investment of time and make a nice little profit on it.
I, for one, would seriously consider picking this little DVD up if I was considering going pro and wanted to learn innovative lighting techniques etc for portraits. I think the price is pretty fair, considering the fact that Joey is telling you how HE does it, and further considering what seminars of this type cost. |

I do believe most folks could step outside and ask their neighbours if they know who Ansel Adams was and get the same response... doesn't prove much.
Personally I am not accomplished enough to consider purchasing this DVD, but I most certainly do not find the price objectionable.

It is kind of hard to take your oppinion as a fine example when you say you are not accomplished enough to purchase his 250 dollar video, however you have a 5D Mark II in your camera bag. lol

I think Ansel Adams is a bad example as a lot of people would know that name, and Bresson as well.
But if you want to your neighbor and asked about Dave hill, Chase Jarvis, Jeremy Cowart, Mcnally, Zack Arias, etc...those are all people whos names mean very little outside of the photography community, and I'd put Joey in there as well (not a bad list of names to be with htough!)
Dude deifnitely gets a lot of hero worship on here just cause he used to post, but thats only natural. |

First reaction: Not enough competitive analysis.
Kelby Training 69.99.
Appears he's mixed a retail product with specialist product pricing.
Love his work though. Thought of him as I was going through Africa. Didn't have a big enough lighting rig with me though to replicate what he did (too hard to carry all that on the back of a BMW 1000 GS motorbike!).

I'd say around $30, the average price for any real 'how-to' DVD by anyone. However, that's just my thought on it, and if someone can get away with being ridiculously over-priced, all the power to them. lol.

Living in NYC and having an international following, he'll do just find for the price. Had I known this was going to elicit such negative remarks, I would have kept the good new to myself.

Sorry Judy. Didn't mean for it to turn into a debate. But this is DPC. Debate Participation Central. |

Damn him for accomplishing what many of us want to do!! ;-) He has done well and still has many many years ahead of him. Hopefully he will fare better in the long run than Annie did but in the meantime, he is having a ride of a lifetime.

Isn't is great when somebody gets to do what they love and make a living doing it? How many people are stuck in a cubicle or in a drudgery job that they hate? Having a retail business history, I say more power to him. I don't think it's idol worship. I just think it's cool cause we knew the guy when he was 15 with a crappy point and shoot - and look where he's gone. I loved him doing "the handshake" with the tribesman in Africa on the trailer. |

Congratulations to Joey! I am not a fan of many people, but I am a Joey fan. I think he is a phenomenal young man of many talents.
...but then again, he's no Ken Rockwell. :P |

"$400 for an MP3 Player! I'd call it the Cube 2.0 as it wont sell, and be killed off in a short time...and it's not really functional." — quote from the iPod's introduction. |
Yeah, but now a days, hes charging for information you can essentially get for free all over the internet...plus that high price point just encourages piracy as well. |
Oh, I'm sure there are tons of people clammering to get their hands on it... Even knowing you can get the info for free on the internet, who has the time to search for it... sometimes having "just what you need" all packaged up with a bow on it for a price is good enough.. |
Haha, I dont know how you are searching for stuff, but I got this website...www.google.com
Its pretty awesome, all I do is type in what I want to find, and it gives me a bunch of links right to it!
But overall, if dude can get people to pay $250 for it, more power to him, I mean he already got them to shell out that much for the first dvd, and it was obviously profitable enough for him to put out a 2nd one. I figure for every one that pirates it, there is another person willing to pay for it, so he wins no matter what. |
Haha, I don't know if you have a 1yr old AND 2yr old, a husband, a house to clean, dinner to make, laundry to do and a full time job ALL THE WHILE, you are trying very hard to become better at photography so you can someday do this as a full time business,
so any dvd's/plug-ins/actions I can get my hands on, are all valuable... Don't underestimate the value of buying knowledge...
$250 bucks doesn't seem outrageous to me... I guess I'm not looking at it as buying JUST a DVD.. I was looking at it from the perspective of buying a mini lesson from someone who's style I like very much and has achieved a great deal..
I think we're all aware you can get anything off of the internet for free.. It's just a matter of how valuable your time is spent searching for it.. |

Thanks for posting this! Congrats to Joey, and if I had the extra cash at the moment I'd certainly buy it.
I haven't checked the ages on those who say it isn't a "fair" price, but it makes me laugh a little. My teenage kids are always on about what's "fair" or not, and their arguments generally have little to do with what the word actually means. Someone could say the DVD is overpriced, or not good value, or beyond one's budget, or simply not interesting (and note that none of those opinions are mine). "Fair", however, has nothing to do with it that I can see. |

I love Joey's work and I think if he can get that much for a DVD ... more power to him! He is very successful at a young age and I think what he has done is amazing. I haven't really been on here in a couple years and it is so cool to see how much he has changed and grown up since then. Go Joey! |

He's far from the only now-successful DPCer who's grown up and moved on. We have quite a group of them actually. It's always nice when they do drop by to say hi to us plebes, but I hope they're all doing well, wherever they are :-)
Kiwiness? whither art thou? Skip? Wanna stop by again and give us some more nuggets of wisdom? Julia Bailey, GriGri girl, how goes your business down in New Orleans? Heida, it was wonderful to see you again after your long hiatus.
I could go on...

cant we just talk about how he is successful and be happy for him? His photography is slightly different from that of a hobbyist, and let's be honest, that's what most of this site is. Whatever I aspire to be in the future, that is what I am now, and being the same age I can recognize how far he has come since he was an amateur on here, like I, 4 years ago.
He uses professional lighting. A profoto power pack is $7,000, no lights included.
He uses professional cameras. We all know how expensive phase one commercial cameras are.
He wouldn't put the price that high if he didn't have buyers. And he gave us a deal on his original $25 dvd back in the day.
Believe me, it's not a ripoff. The information he is giving out is extremely valuable, and quite a deal compared to my BFA in Photojournalism.
