Abstract typically means that form or color takes "precedence" in the viewers perception over the identity of the object. In other words, a photo may be of a tall building, with balconies (picking an example which shouldn't be in the challenge, since it's macro), and you may be able to recognize that. HOWEVER, when you look at it, you see the pattern that they form, more saliently than you see the "building with balconies". Same for color.

That would be how I look at it, though personally, if I can identify the subject, I think of it as a semi-abstract. Still fits the challenge, IMO. Not everyone interprets the concept that flexibly however.

It's hard to be too disappointed when I didn't invest too emotionally in this one. The comment was a really good one, though.
