And, I find it ironic that I'm a "dpcbot" because I don't think it is a good idea to ensure that only a certain kind of photography gets exposure. |
What is this "Certain Kind of Photography" you speak of?? Its like the ribbon winners here are bad people?? Shall we oust anyone who has a style which the masses find appealing and banish them to the land of formula photography?
Shall we all step down to a level where everyone gets a trophy and a party hat?

Not even close, sir. This "certain kind of photography" are the final 50 (or whatever number) of shots that "make it" to the final cut. Yea, the others may be "visible," but who is going to look at them? So, the cycle is perpetuated. I used to strive for a "certain kind of photography" but by being exposed to different kinds, I've learned and gained enough confidence to "branch out" to those "other kinds of photography. Under your proposal, I would never get to see "other kinds" and I wouldn't get to share what I want. I don't see that as being a positive.
Again, would I vote on every round, or would I just vote one time?????
There are things that could be done to improve this site. However, this idea, as you have presented it, is simply not one of them.

And again, what is "This "certain kind of photography" are the final 50 (or whatever number) of shots that "make it" to the final cut"? I have no idea what genre of photography that may be? Do you? Will it include your photography? Is that where the problem is?
Regarding things to improve this site, I pay my membership fees here as well. keep that in mind. Its "simply" the way it is.

But Ivo dear boy, you ARE a king: you can pay as much or as little attention as you want to the deserving and the undeserving.
It's just, it's just, mmm, it's just that you aren't wearing any clothes.
As for "Were you all convent teachers at one time???," I ressemble that remark. |

This is my son's graph for one of the current challenges:
He was one of the bottom for quite awhile in the beginning, but it has skyrocketed since. I have had photos that were the opposite-- stated out extremely high, stayed there for quite awhile and then plummeted. Give everyone their fair chance at the votes.
This is a site for everyone -- not the elite. If you want to be elitist, go to 1x. |
So if you have not read enough of the thread to really understand, why are you commenting on something you don't really understand?
Is this a PTA meeting or sumthin?? |
I think she captured the gist quite well based on the example she presented as a potential problem with the proposal. |

I'm quite happy where am I in my journey to be spectacular. I've entered, I've won, I've crashed and burned. And it's pretty much the case that I've learned the most on the photos that have sucked. I'm not learning a whole heck of a lot when I submit photos to National Geographic that aren't accepted. What's the purpose of taking the top 50? Should we only pander to the good photographers? Personally, I love watching someone start off with 4's, move to 5s, 6s and then ribbon. |

No excuses. Since joining this site early this year, Wendy has achieved 3 ribbons, 1 HM and a high 5 average. She HAS become better, according to your suggested criteria.
I'm not totally sure what the point is I was making with that. |

Wendy, if you don't mind, I'm going to chime in here. I am one of these people. With my first entry, I barely reached 4, that was 15 challenges ago. I got my third 6 in a row, and my first top 10 in the last challenge. I have yet to ribbon, hell, I may never ribbon, but that's fine. DP isn't about a ribbon, at least not to me. Its about becoming a better photographer and a better artist. I work full-time, and I go to school full time, I'm graduating in December and plan to apply to Law school, so needless to say, my life is insane. With the little free time I have, I look forward to entering challenges, and when I do, I study the challenge topic. I try to come up with an idea that I can execute, then the real challenge is going out and executing my concept. If I can do that successfully, then I am happy.
I finally feel like I am getting a better eye for photography, and I owe allot of that to this website. Through scoring poorly, the comments I received, and voting on other photos, I have become a better judge of what a quality shot is. I enjoy this site, and I really enjoy the fact that it is simple... Anyone can vote, either 1-10, and leave a comment if they so desire. Its simple, to the point, and at the end of the day, its fair. If we start trying to handicap the voting so that photos that score well aren't favored, or we only vote on top 50's or whatever the idea may be; we take away from the intent of this site, which is to have a fair competition between photographers of all skill levels and allowing each of them to vote on each others work. Just my 2 cents... |

As a photographer who has participated in almost every challenge for over two years, and have (so far) achieved two 6's, I somehow get the idea that Ivo's idea would er shall we say, reduce my photos' participation in the challenges. I would love to improve, and I do try, but don't know how. Some of my favorite shots barely make a 5. I have quite a few Tan ribbons, and many bottom 10 finishes. I feel like I have improved, but still can't seem to figure out the "it" that makes the difference. I don't have the $$$ for big lenses, studio setups, strobe, cell or other flashes. I have no models, no studio, and pretty much no time. Yet, I'm still here - distracting from the quality shots. Not sure - should I feel insulted?

Oh, maybe, but not by me. I will add that when I visited Iceland some years ago, I had the chance to either visit the Faroe Islands or Greenland. I researched both locations with great care. It was a close toss-up. Only because transportation was 'easier' did I select Greenland. You don't need me to tell you that you live in a beautiufl place. It shows in your work. You are very good.
I hope you will continue to show your expertise to those of us who could use the knowledge that you have.

You shouldn't feel insulted... You admitted yourself that you feel like you have improved. If I participated in every challenge, I'd rack up some brownies too... I only participate in the ones where I feel I have a good idea or concept :) |

No Paul but thanks anyhow. Maybe we should try not to use the forums as a big hankie for our life's misfortunes and fish for validation of our own feelings of inadequacy. You tell me Paul, should he feel insulted because I tabled an idea on how we run a challenge or two? Is it my fault that he is stuck in a funk? |

This thread is not about commenting on other members' perceived personality disorders, and doing so is a violation of more than one forum rule. Your response was completely unnecessary and non-contributory to the discussion topic, and was certainly a clear example of a violation of the rule I cited.
I don't know what's bugging you (other than people not liking your suggestion), but your recent posts are pushing the boundaries. Now, I chose to post a "friendly reminder" to encourage a measure of self-discipline on your part. However, if you prefer, I will defer any further action to my compatriots ... |
