Might be the same new member who just left a comment and a low vote on mine. I did PM them thanking them for at least explaining their low vote. That should be encouraged and perhaps they will participate more in the future. |
I usually go to look at other comments they leave and then suddenly, things make more sense :) |

I was thinking about the 1 bandits and their possible reasons. For many of us a 1 says: "this is so bad it cannot get any worse", but in actual fact, I think most of the 1's handed out are a punishment for whatever the member does not care for and feels you need to be held back for it. HDR-look, overdone cliche shots, whatever they have a strong objection to. By the same token, many of the 10's handed out are a reward and an expression of appreciation for out of the box approaches that the voters feels will be underrated by others. |

In my honest opinion 1s are handed out for the following reasons
1) To try and improve the voter's own relative position
2) Just to cause trouble, and like to see their affect in the forum posts
3) Maybe from a voter who simply isn't getting the scores they think they deserve so it's retribution time
4) Now and then from people who don't understand the voting scale and think 1 is the best (I think this is of course where most of my 1s come from lol)
5) Maybe from people who feel they should never issue a vote higher than their own IQ
6) Occasionally and I mean very occasionally because the image is so bad a 1 is about all that can be given (I have never seen a pic that bad on here by the way)
Point 1 is the dangerous one as I firmly believe that this type of Muppet selectively issue 1s to the very best images and high votes to the lesser entries, and
in this way the intention is realized without fear of the scrubber removing the affect.
Please feel free to add to the list :)

| I think I have only voted a 1 on rare occasion when I was certain the entry was an intentional effort at a brown and I was helping their effort. One time I was wrong and rollover revealed it to be an honest effort from a new member. |

If you look back at the top three of the challenges, you will find very few, mostly zero 1's. I believe if you get significant 1's and 2's, there is something about your image that is polarizing to some people. Maybe they just don't like it. Maybe they don't like the subject. Maybe their voting strategy uses the entire scale. Personally, I use the whole scale. I give very few 1's and very few 10's with my average being about 5.3, right where I want it to be - ideally I would be 5.5. My votes are based on the quality of the images in a given challenge - on a curve if you will. If most images are poor, an otherwise average image may get a high score from me, and conversely if most images are very good (IMO). There is no point in arguing with the scales that people apply as it all works out in the end.
Personally, I felt the challenge being discussed here was below what I consider to be average for DPC. Maybe others did too, that's why some of you are getting low scores. I gave one "1" and one "10" in this challenge.
But please stow the troll talk and look inward. Don't blame your less than expected scores on the voters. It's been proven time and time again that there is no "real" troll problem here, and if someone does it, the votes are recognized and scrubbed.

Agreed. There is no way of knowing their actual reasons, though. Most of them don't explain such votes with a comment.

I don't believe there is a significant "problem", but I do believe there are some people who enjoy tossing a bunch of 1's and 2's out.
BTW, if I get a low vote accompanied by a comment explaining it, I will frequently PM the member thanking them for the explanation. We need more people willing to do this.
