No troll problem eh...

Take a look at the vote profile on this winning entry

I got hit by a 1 when very few people were online and manage to track down who it was from their voting average.
I sent them a polite PM giving them the benefit of the doubt.

They mailed back apologising and promising not to do it again and as far as I can see they haven't

A low vote with a comment is fair enough.

Am I the only person who gets annoyed with condescending, patronising comments from people who have never participated in a challenge, have no pictures in their portfolio (no portfolio) and probably no camera? I can take criticism but from someone who is qualified to give it.

Everybody deserves an opinion. Just ignore those comments that you don't find helpful. Its all good.

Moving up slowly, but just received a positive comment accompanied by a 4. Maybe someone else was adjusting their vote at the same time.

I guess I don't understand your point. Four people gave "1"s and two people gave "2"s. Are they trolls? I'm guessing not if they didn't get kicked out at scrub. They didn't like it, or thought it was illegal or whatever, I can't begin to guess why. But I appreciate that you used that one as an example because while it got four ones, there was only one other "1" in the rest of the top ten, including your entry. Wouldn't you think if there were trolls out and about trying to influence the top images there would be more top entries with "1"s?

Can't someone simply not like/not understand an image?

My recent red in the "not seen before" challenge would have been blue if it wasn't for the low votes I got that the blue winner didn't. I got way more "10's". Maybe those low voters just don't like alligators, or thought the picture was fake - whatever. I didn't like the low votes, nor did I understand why, but I wouldn't call them trolls. I respect their right to vote as they choose.

My point is Bill that you state:-
It's been proven time and time again that there is no "real" troll problem here, and if someone does it, the votes are recognized and scrubbed.

I simply used that image as an illustration that IMO some of the more clever trolls vote in such a way as to avoid the scrubber and it takes very little to figure
out how to achieve that.

It would be interesting to understand why the image i used as an illustraion would be deserving of 1s and 2s and I don't believe anyone would be justified in allocating such a low vote based on "I just don't like it"

I accept, absolutely, that people are free to vote as they wish and I would never advocate otherwise but I would hope that people would be more considerate of the
time and effort put in by those on here who produce oustanding work.

I don't disagree at all. Many times I've looked at top scoring entries and wonder how someone could possibly justify such a low score. I've since come to realize that 1) I'm not going to change it, and 2) not everyone has the extraordinarily good taste that I am blessed with. ;)

The thing that's odd is the number of troll votes. Lutchenko seems to be getting more than the normal share for a photo averaging what it's averaging. I think people are not liking this challenge and it's entries and are punishing with votes.

The nature of this challenge results in less "feel good" images. The tone is more somber. I can tell you from experience that lighthearted entries in a serious themed challenge tend to fare worse.

Vote harassment is just as bad as trolling.

Bit of a drop. Maybe I'll get lucky and still continue my 6 or above streak here...

You really did that? That seems like lots of work for a photography contest that yields nothing to the winner. Wow, I have never heard of that being done before.

Very little work actually as there were only about 10 people online at the time so it only took a few mins, and my rationale was that it had taken me several hours to produce the pic so spending 5 mins to find out who thought it worthy of a 1 was reasonable.

I consider "trolling" to be similar to queue jumping in which case is telling someone not to push in front of you in a queue as bad as doing it yourself?
after all there are generally no rules or laws in many places where one has to queue saying that it is an offence to jump the queue.

Just for the record I did not harass anyone

Slowly going in the right direction. It's already higher than I had expected. Some great comments indicate I got my idea across.
