Just for a rough comparision, I was back in the UK last week. I filled up a car, and it cost me the equivalent of $63 (USD). I just filled my car up here today, and it cost me $20 USD.

Were the size of the gas tanks the same on both vehicles?

Petrol is around $5.50 a gallon in the UK, if that helps the comparision along.

Gas is *way* more expensive here in Europe than in the US (or Canada, for that matter). That's why Europeans usually only shake their heads when Americans complain about raising prices ... ;)
No offense, but America is the biggest polluter on the planet. So maybe slightly higher gas prices will lead to less fuel burning and thus less pollution. (yeah, I know, I'm hopeless ;)

Prices in the UK might be more, but from what I am told the salaries are commesurate with that.
You can't compare apples to oranges.

| My husband & I went out and got him a Toyata Prius a few months ago to save money on gas and help the environment by not over-polluting it. We live in LA, which is very high in gas prices for the US and we do need a car to get around. The public transportation doesn't get us very far very fast around here. I suggest everyone sell their SUV's and get hybrids! Heehee... :) |

For my field, salaries in the US are at least double those in the UK - so yes, salaries are different - mostly a lot less. At best they may equal the equivalent US salary. I'd be real curious to know which fields salaries are higher in the UK than in the US.
At least for my own particular case, the cost of living is about half as much in the US, and the salaries are also higher.

My best friend lives in the UK and makes nothing! She has to budget very tightly and her rent is so outrageously high! I can't imagine living in the UK. She, luckily, doesn't have credit cards though and saves up for everything she wants to buy. I think the Europeans are smart about that for the most part. A majority of US salaries are spent on debt. I am a financial planner, i see it daily! I am so glad that I don't have credit card debt!!! :)
I also know that in the UK, transportation in big cities is better than in most US cities. So, my friend in London can get all over the place without a car. Whe she travels to Nottingham and Brighton, she takes a train. She never needs a car to get anywhere... |
