Im fairly new to photography and was wanting to get a new camera. I am currently using a Nikon Coolpix S210. Dont get me wrong its a great camera just not very manual friendly. I want to get a D SLR and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions?

If you are happy with the Nikon brand, you should just take a look at their offerings. They have quite a few models in several price ranges.

What is your budget for a camera and one or perhaps two lenses? That will very much define your options.

Im looking fairly cheap around $300-$400.
I was looking at the Nikon D60 or the Cannon Rebel

Thing is, no matter what some people might tell you, you can't go wrong with any system.

My advice? Go to a store, and hold the cameras. Feel them, play with them, and then go with what feels the most right for you.

Both are very reasonable places to start.

This is a decision point where you need to really consider what you are doing. When you buy a digital SLR, you are primarily buying into a lens system rather than a camera body. If I were you, I would start taking a look at lenses you might want in the future and compare the benefits between the Nikon and Canon equivalents and choose your camera body to go along with the lenses you think you like the best.

I ruled out 2 brands completely just because of ergonomics... they just didn't feel right in my hands. Unless you are dead set on the big two offerings, other brands (Pentax, Olympus, Sony, etc.) offer in-camera stabilization, so older lenses also become IS lenses, and new glass is not so expensive.

I dont want to get too complicated! I also want to stic to Nikon if possible GREAT brand but i must admit the Canon RebelX is a great camera as well thats why its between those two so far!

You might prefer to move to something like the Canon S5 IS rather than all the way to a DSLR at this stage. It gives you many of the features of a DSLR without the expense of multiple lenses, etc. It's got a lot of flexibility, from super-macro (0 focus distance) to 12x zoom, lots of shooting modes including manual, so you'd have room to grow with it.

I looked into what you said and would rather stick to a D SLR! Thank you for the suggestion if i have any problems i now have something to fall back onto!

OK, rule 1 (no one has let you know yet)

You are not allowed to post anything regarding a photo that is in a challenge, or is to be in a challenge, that may enable it to be identified as yours.......(ie your Photo title).....Might be a good idea to edit your post to remove that out.......

After the challenge is over (after voting is finished) and if you would like more feedback, then start a thread asking for it in the forums. hence the voting process is notcompromised in any way.

OK, now on the main question.
I use Nikon, I started with Nikon, I will now (unless someone with lots of money gives it to me) will always be Nikon......Why.....It costs too much to replace lenses and other equipment that is not compatible with Canon (and other brands)........

For that reason, I do encourage you to consider carefully your brand, especailly in light of where you want to be with your photography.

If you are going to buy a body and one lens, and that is it........No reall problems
If like the rest of us, you are going to add and extra Lens (or three), Flashs and other stuff over the coming years, it quickly becomes to the point when you will never change.

Canon are a very good brand (Shooting myself now for admitting that). Nikon are as well. Other brands (yes there are others, such as Pentax, Sony etc) also produce good stuff in that area.

If you are intending on upgrading bodies, getting more lenses, doing photography for a long time and ending up broke like the rest of us, I would advise that Nikon/Canon are both great choices, both lens sets are great (others will argue for different reasons, both ways), and both are there for the long haul.

My advice, do plenty of research, go to a camera store and hold all of them, ask the sales man plenty of questions and see which seems to feel best for you..............

I replaced my stolen 30d with a used one off of ebay a few months back for $375. I'd much rather have it than the new rebels with more megapixels because of the better frames per second and better noise performance. Honestly, if i was starting right now i would go with a nikon because in my opinion the d700 is the best digital buy out there. Canon has slightly more appealing color (for me), and i like their lenses better but i have been shooting my "artsy" stuff with a medium format tlr lately anyway.
Anyway, i would recommend checking the used markets for the 30d, 40d, and d200 because there are some surprising deals to be had.

I would look for a 20D if you want to go the Canon path...... Can get them in that price range and IMO (<== I still use it) they is not a HUGE difference to the current 50D (I didn't say no difference before I get screamed down... Just not a lot).

I bought my Canon Rebel XT for $327 on clearance a year ago. I'm happy with it, and it was a serious upgrade from my Powershot. That being said, I still get some of my highest scoring entries with the Powershot. If you shop 3-5 year old models, you can get a nice SLR for the budget you mentioned, but you will not have the extreme closeup capability without additional 壉‚¬n$€$. As others have suggested, a used 20D or 30D is also a very good deal. Keep an eye out in the buy/sell forum here. Oftentimes someone who wants to upgrade is offering last years camera for a very good price.
