Picture of my four and five year old sons, captured in the front yard this afternoon. How can I get the hot spots out of it without ruining the rest of it? I have to have this moment on file, because they will never believe they really hugged each other when they get grown!

in PS you can do a control-shift-alt (tilde ~) and that will select the highlights.
then control-J to copy it to a new layer
then change the lower blending to MULTIPLY.
you can then dupe this layer to get more darkening, and use the OPACITY slider to adjust how much.
To lighten, do the same but after selecting the highlights, INVERSE SELECTION will give you the lows, and then in BLENDING MODE choose SCREEN.

Thank you, dear...I will try to work on it. Photoshop and I just don't get along very well. I'll take a stab at it!

there are some good books out by Kelby on PS. I have the Elements one, now have PS CS, looked at the CS book and the same (pretty much).
You can also (on a dup) use the clone tool, blend mode on darken and opacity 50%. Spft edged brush. Find a "clean area" and alt click on it (selects it). then paint over the hot spots. you may have to reselect areas at time also. I usually do this on a layer above the background layer. I am then able to blend, change opacity more, or change the mode.
