For me it was a shock to see so many B&W/desat entries. Seriously. My immediate reaction was that converting to B&W seems a bit of a cop out; an easy way of fitting the challenge without the difficulty of conceptualizing and shooting a grey subject.

Guess it goes without saying I interpreted this one as capturing the color grey (gray). I made a concerted effort to shoot a grey-in-color subject and can't help but feel less than rewarded given voting thus far (setting aside technical aspects, interest in subject, etc). Oh well.

Ditto :)

that is my interpretation...I didn't enter, but am voting based on that concept.

Me, too! my immediate thought for this was grey in color, not desat to make it grey. There has been some beautiful work done on this site of color shots that look completely grey - but they are color. Good luck to all.

I think so much grey has depressed the voters in this challenge. I don't appear to be the only one with a bland score and lack of comments.

eta; You know, I suspect some voters may be being pickier about what grey means than they have been on other colour challenges. For example, in "Red" people didn't worry about it being "primary" red, but allowed any of the many hues, as long as it said red to their minds. Poppy red, blood red and sunset red are a lot different, but we still think of them as red.

But I think for some, grey is nothing more than the midpoint between black and white. If your grey is warmer or cooler they may be voting that it's not really grey. A possiblilty?
(or maybe they just don't like our entries :) )

I agree with you 100%. Maybe next challenge can be color carnival :)

there a lot of photographs in the grey challenge that look like they have been desaturated but havent ..
if you are going to mark down a photograph that appears to be desaturated but are unsure, then putting the photograph in photoshop or wotever and boosting up the hue/sat to the max will show if it has been desaturated or not .. :)

Where was the rule against desaturation? You can take a photo of a gray subject and desaturate the surroundings for artistic presentation. I will repeat that I expect a lot of vote scrubbing of the votes from the group that voted DNMC 1... because they voted upside down due to a very narrow interpretation of the challenge. Their interpretation went beyond a straightforward interpretation. But, that is their prerogative. Personally, if the image said "gray", then I didn't care too much if it contained a rainbow of colors, or not. And, if there was no gray in the subject of the image, then I didn't rate the image as well. But, I did not organize a group to vote DNMC 1, like some people did.

Furthermore, there must be some guilty consciences amongst the DNMC 1 group, because the big wave of DNMC 1 votes were not accompanied by any comments. (on my image)

The good news is that my image's score has improved more than 1 full point (since 30 votes) from the fair minded voters.

How do you know that anyone organized a group?

Where's the rule against voting down desat if we don't like it?

If, as you say, it's their prerogotive to vote DNMC1 then why in heaven would those votes be scrubbed??

And how do you know your 1's were DNMC if they didn't comment? Maybe they just didn't like your shot.

Sigh... nobody asked ME to join their DMNC1 club... I'm sad now...

But the good news is this: If you and I happened to give a good score to the image, we are Officially "Fair Minded" :-)))

I think you are, I think I am. I hope I am. At long last we will know with Certainty! But now I am on Pins and Needles, Tingling With Anticipation that I might be Officially and Verifiably Fair Minded.

Who knew it all hinged on a single vote cast on a single entry?

The suspense is killing me....

I know I am not in any club and havent voted any pictures a one and those I did vote low was because I just thought they were bad pictures like I do in any other challenge I vote on. I still dont think tho that this contest was meant to be a desaturation or a converted b/w picture challenge. It was to capture the color of grey which is hard to do. Not something that should be a free study and just desaturated or converted.

just to clear this up ..
i wasnt suggesting that ppl vote down a desaturated photograph ..
i was saying that if that's the way you're voting then to check first .. bummer to mark someone down because of an erroneous assumption ..
it happens in a lot of challenges .. i wish ppl would give the benefit of the doubt more often when voting .. :)

After browsing through all the messages in this thread, it seems like the scores (at least the reported scores) are relatively low.

Does anyone have a 6.0 or higher in this challenge?

How about a 5.8 or higher?

Well I'm barely hanging on to my score .. every now and then it dips back to 5.7's
