Black is black. And, white is white. Same goes for nearly black and nearly white. There are a lot of gray tones in between. Think of Ansel Adams' zones. //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zone_system Zones 2 through 8 would be ideal for this challenge.

From feedback comments (all marked "helpful") in the AA-style challenge, I've learned there is a wide variance in viewer's/voter's monitors. Calibration is everything. Even though I constrained my image to zones 2 through 8.... with zero pixels in zones 0, 1, 9, 10.... I suspect my image will not be seen that way by those with poorly calibrated or poor quality monitors.

So, do everyone a favor and calibrate your monitor prior to reviewing the contest entries. If you know you have a weak monitor, then take that into consideration in your DNMC comments.

Seems that "gray" is a more common spelling of the word in the US, while "grey" is more common in the rest of the world. Both are generally interchangeable as both are understood.

"Gray is a color
Grey is a colour"

=)

There are two spellings and two meanings here.

Grey is a colour
Gray is a scientific unit relating to ionizing radiation; symbol Gy, named after Louis Gray.

Gray as a colour is a US variant that can lead to ambiguity if you are a radiologist lol.

However the Gray, Gy, was only defined in 1975 and as such the US variant of Grey would have been in common use by then and as such I reluctantly accept that for the purpose of the challenge the two words are interchangeable.

By the same token as the word Gray appears in the challenge description I feel that photographs of images depicting ionizing radiation would also comply.

Advanced editing and no mention of color or BW, so I guess we are free to do either, as long as it all comes out gray!

When we shoot the other colors, Red Blue Green ETC, we do not turn these to black and white or desat. so my way of thinking is shoot Grey in color.

My higher scores will definitely go to the people that shoot full color and yet make Grey the primary and most important aspect of their main subject.

It could be a pigeon surrounded by a cacophony of rainbow skittles, but it if the pigeon is prominent and the main subject, and the photo is well done and creative, it'll get far more kudos than someone throwing in a B&W conversion of something.

The thing about this approach is that it may *look* bw, but has not been converted. I've had several shots this month that, due to weather and what not, look bw.

Well, I'm talking about the incredibly obvious ones, but as always, creativity and impact will be paramount regardless.

Nvidia graphics running the optimization wizard and following the prompts will set the icc profile for gray scale and the contrast for the gray scale by making the 2 darkest appear as 1,. Having said this resetting the the graphics default settings to be very very close to the real colors in today's world on my monitor.

*KICK*

I'm stuck in a one on one showdown with this challenge. If I live out the week, it'll be a miracle.

Oh, don't ;D We're just giving you a hard time.

Look at it this way:

FINALLY we have a challenge that is actually kind of difficult to do. It's causing some serious consideration and thinking to happen. It may result in either some of the best images we've seen in a long time, or a giant wash of crap with some serious diamonds hidden within. Either way, it's going to test DPC like many challenges haven't been able to do in a long time, IMO.

That's wonderful.

Give yourself a clap on the back.

Maybe it'll take your mind off the feet on your ass. LOL.

I'm conflicted...I have one in, but I highly doubt it'll do well...I may pull it.

ETA: It's been pulled.

All righty Soul.

I did a shot, it is grey its pretty boring, but technically it is pretty perfect. Just boring.

It is harder than it looks and it made a lot of people stand up and take notice, so well done on that,

now NEVER suggest anything again!!!!!!!!!!

hehehehe =oP
