LOL - You wanna bet we don't get a bit of fog in the Bay Area for the next seven days?

:-))

Same situation here in Seattle/Tacoma area, we've been under fog for nearly 2 weeks solid, of course first clear days come now!

Seems that "gray" is a more common spelling of the word in the US, while "grey" is more common in the rest of the world. Both are generally interchangeable as both are understood.

"Gray is a color
Grey is a colour"

I'm actually considering entering this challenge. (It will be my first one ever, if I do it!) Because it's advanced editing, do I have to do advanced editing?

Not at all! You don't have to do any editing if you don't wanna. It's more about limits than requirements.

I do hope you enter...

I'm obligated to enter this challenge due to a showdown between nobody and myself.

Aye carumba.

This is going to be a long week.

hehe.

the description is Capture the color grey somehow. You should do your best to avoid extreme shades of gray (read: shades of black and white).. doesn't mention anything about doing your best to capture a photo of snow... ;)

But it's not as easy as it sounds. You need to get a shot with just greys, avoiding each end of the histogram, yet still make it artistic and appealing.

Well, as in any color challenge, as long as your main subject is primarily grey, other colors (or blacks and whites) in your photo aren't going to hurt you.

Take a look at any of the color photo winners. (Red, Purple, Yellow, etc.) Are any of them just PURE shades of that color? no.

True, tho' the description says "You should do your best to avoid extreme shades of gray (read: shades of black and white)."

Then again, when have challenge descriptions meant anything?

Again, that just refers to your main subject, not the photo entire. IMO, anyway.

OMG I just had an idea! I was reading the thread think how on earth do I do that and suddenly an idea popped into my head! YAY

I really hope some odd, small splashes of color(s) will generally be accepted (and used!) in this challenge. Otherwise I think it'll be an awefully boring and monotonous challenge to vote & comment.

Uh, I'm not an experienced photographer, so perhaps I'm missing something that's obvious to the rest of you. When the challenge ends with "(read: shades of black and white)" there is no link & no author. Is this just a suggestion that I read from various sources about "shades of black and white" as a topic or is there something published in particular that this is in reference to?
01/27/2009 03:51:18 PM · #44
What he meant by 'read' is more like this in a whole sentence

You should do your best to avoid extreme shades of gray (LIKE: shades of black and white).

As Juliet said, "Read" in this instance doesn't mean to read a source of print, but rather "You should read my statement as meaning:"

Don't speak to me of ISO! First sunny day we get in three weeks and I go running for photos, and get a whole bunch, and get home...

and they're all in ISO 400 and I've intentionally under-exposed them all and didn't even stop to consider why I was hitting 1/4000 so much.

OH K10D, why must you be so noisy.

Must.. get... K20D... with... CMOS... sensor.

Yes, I see clear skies as far as the eye can see, it's beautiful, but damn! lol. I'll try to go on skyline, half moon bay, and maybe pacifica...hopefully our dreary fog will come back in time :)

Nothing but blue currently, not even clouds. Too bad this challenge isn't during the Chinese New Year parade :P
