Well, it was three consecutive weeks of pushing the rules to their literal limits in the advanced challenges. Last week̢۪s picture was accompanied by Ed̢۪s (e301) beautiful sunset through a fake window winning shot, which both contributed to endless threads about photographic integrity and interpretation of the rules. I̢۪m glad this got quickly resolved with an updated set of rules.
Upon popular demand, here are my three photos which were disqualified last week by a majority vote of 9 against 3 on behalf of the Site Council.
For those who missed out, please leave comments whether they are detrimental or praiseful.
Once again, thanks for the 3 supporters in the Site Council, you know who you are, and anyone else who backed me up. For those supporting the disqualifications, I fully understand your point of views and I hope there are no hard feelings about the whole affair.
Butterflying Knife
And here is the shameful original.
Bar Fight
And its even more shameful original
Peeping through a Polarizer

Such a shame about the knife one. You were so close to getting it right in camera. All you needed to do was move it away from the background and use a board to block light from hitting it(the background). Then use a couple of lights to create more highlight on the knife. I found a good book on lighting, "Learning to Light" by Roger Hicks and Frances Schultz.
I simply love the window shot, but it is more of an artist arty type picture and doesn't belong on a photo site. |

I find this images very good, expecially the window image. You may be on a "gray zone" there but if your explantions are right (which I´ve no reson to doubt) then I wouldn´t have voted you out if I would have been in the council. I´ve seen similar things done here without any trouble and with the advance editing rules we are talking about so much more than regular old fasion photography (which I have nothing against).
Find your work an example of creativity and artistical vision which makes this fantastic webpage better.
Agree with Gordon. Would like to see some originals of the Window/polarizer shot.
Good luck and please continue providing us with original and creatively made images. |

I can't beleive how ugly ALL of the originals are, they have no worthy composition! Your talent should be put to better use, try scaming national geographic pictures! i think we'd ALL appreciate you more if you'd concentre your small efforts on somewhere else. I cant beleive i was fooled by digital art, you are an insult to my intelligence!!!
...
thats what i would have said! ...if i wasnt your cousin and the co-photographer who helped you acheive these pictures (that everyone should praise!!!) |

I, too, am glad it has been resolved/clarified.
Labuda, You do amazing things with photoshop (and you're not bad with the camera, either). I do hope we continue to see more of your work.
Just as an aside, (this is karmat the member, not karmat the SC asking) have you ever thought about doing a tutorial or something showing your processes. Even a before/after thing in the forums or something. Not necessarily challenge entries, just pictures you have "played" with.

Remember that, outside of the challenges, DPC does have a gallery for "digital art," and that you are free to sell these exceptional examples if you want. Other than copyright and site TOS restrictions, you can post for comments and/or sale anything you want. |

I'd also like to see you do some PS tutorials. I'd love to be able to achieve some of the effects you have created.

Alright, here's the original for the Polarizer picture. I must say it hardly squeezes through the rules and I'm not surprised it got disqualified. I am surprised at how well it did though, considering how fake it looks.
I like the way EddyG described this picture as "a creative interpretation of the rules"

I would really be interested in seeing the steps you used to create the final version from this. This would be a great tutorial subject.

It'll have to wait until after exam period, ie, next week. I'll work on some tutorials when my summer starts; even though work starts in the same time!

labuda, count me in as one of your many fans. I really appreciate your talent, both with traditional photography and in your more creative efforts as well. I was, at the same time, amused and annoyed at the Chicken Littles on this site who decried the end of civilzation as we know it because you wanted to test the limits of the rules. If people look at your portfolio, they will see a very accomplished photographer. Yet they make you a pariah because you recognize that photography, like other art forms, changes and evolves.
Last time I checked, every fashion magazine in print takes a cover photo and chops off pounds, stretches figures and smoothes away wrinkles and blemishes to an produce a new reality. The digital darkroom is a fantastic new tool at our disposal - nothing to be afraid of and everything to celebrate.
I can understand and appreciate the need to learn traditional techniques. We are all better artists and photographers for learning the basics of lighting, composition and balance. After all, Pablo Picasso could create wonderfully realistic paintings and sketches, but he also let his creative vision take him in new and exciting directions.
Whether you continue to push the envelope here or at other places like worth1000.com, we'll all be better off for your contributions.
I am also looking forward to any tutorials you care to share.
Dave
