To bad I used this idea already. I think this is as abstract as I’ve done to date with photography. It is just a coke from Burger King, the camera stuck in the top of the paper cup, and with flash take the picture. It wasn’t as easy as it sounds. A lot of throwaway pics (over a hundred) to finally get it. ‘It’ being to my satisfaction. The coke, ice and bubbles make a nice abstract.

Does adding the title to explain what it is in truth detract from the score?
04/26/2004 08:34:54 PM · #28
huh?

Lets say you take a picture of a monkey but it doesn't look like a monkey but in your title you say its a monkey...will you score lower?
04/26/2004 09:27:47 PM · #30
Are you trying to tell me my Ice picture looks like a Monkey? :)
04/26/2004 09:29:00 PM · #31
LOL...noooooo...but i have a photo that may not be considered "the best interest of photographic integrity" without first knowing waht it is...but that is part of abstracity
04/26/2004 09:31:13 PM · #32
Or do you have a picture of a monkey that doesn̢۪t look like a monkey but you titled monkey so maybe you could get a better score, Or maybe not.
04/26/2004 09:33:06 PM · #33
that's what i mean!...so does adding its identity in the title help me or not?
04/26/2004 09:38:10 PM · #34
If its an abstract photo and you mean that its actually something else besides what the photo actually is, like you made something into the shape of a monkey, then saying that it is supposed to be a monkey will help the voter know what your trying to show. Like if you made a monkey out of garbage and calld it garbage, it's just garbage. If the voter knows what you mean, then you probably will score higher.

Crap Robert, you make no sense whatsoever!

Seriously I titled my Ice pic Ice because I felt people may be more inclined to accept it as a photograph if they could grasp what they were seeing. I do believe it helps to define the object in the picture for the masses to grasp, understand. I have a problem with being obtuse with my titles at times. Sometimes I̢۪m the only one to understand. It is a way I have to appear intelligent when in truth I̢۪m not.

Would this be considered abstract?

Find the Image_ID number which appears at the end of the photo's URL (72420 in this case). When composing your post, use the top-right button to "Insert Thumbnail" and type that number into the text field you get.

Note that if you go back to edit your post, the "thumb" links you see at first will have been "translated" into the full code sequence needed.

Sadly, as I have relearned recently, it doesn't matter that some people take the time to understand or research and it doesn't even matter how the actual challenge description is worded... majority of voters will make their interpretation based on nothing more than the challenge title and their whims.

The title is not the whole thing...as above. There ARE instructions to limit this challenge.
But, unfortunately it will end as always. The voters will look at the title and GO with it. Wonder how well they did on their SAT tests in HS? I have the SAT test. See ya saturday. Top of page says SAT TEST. So they only look keep their mind set to things involving satellites. OOOPS! DIdn't read the instructions. (C:

I think THIS is one of the most intriguing abstract photos I've seen on DPC lately!

Just curious, but does anyone think Jovi's picture would fall into the artwork rule? It's a pretty picture.
04/27/2004 06:36:42 AM · #46
I am not one to usually even think about abstract pictures...I am more of a "realist" I guess...so this challenge is proving very difficult for me. My question relates to Photoshop and the new rules. If you take a picture of a "real" item, then use various tools in PS to change colors, add filter(s), etc. but you don't combine images or create new elements in the photo, would that be OK? I've put a pretty lame example of what I mean below...I just don't want to bark up the wrong tree all week trying to find something to submit if it won't be eligible anyway. I don't have an eye like you guys do!
changed into this
by inverting the colors and then using the crystallize filter.

Literal photographic representations of the entirety of existing works of art (including your own) are not considered acceptable submissions, however creative depictions or interpretations of "art" are permissible. This includes, but is not limited to: paintings, sculptures, photographs, drawings, computer artwork, computer monitors, and televisions. A literal representation is one which is composed in such a way as to compel the voter to rate only the work of art represented and not the artistic decisions made by the photographer (i.e., lighting, composition, background elements, etc).

The reason I asked was because your whole frame is filled with their artwork, and I don't want to break any rules so this seemed like a good time to clarify what the rule means. To me it means my picture needs to be something more than someone else's artwork. But I do see how you framed it to get the best composition. I didn't mean to upset you.

No offence taken :) Just pointing out that it wasn't a literal representation.

Just submitted my abstract and now reading the threads I can see a deluge of "not abstract enough" comments flooding my way :) Oh well it is all part of the fun!!!
