i didn't say you were doing anything wrong, however - sometimes downloading some program to scan your computer based on some photographers advice might not be the best solution. ie: it might be an easy way to make things worse. especially if you aren't fairly specific as to what might be causing the problem. i guess my point is - it's easier to get good advice with solving a problem when you provide specific details of the problem.

not trying to be an ass - but eeeek and that and whatnot and this and that isn't very specific.

I see what he is saying...However I am a Systems Analyst so I do have somewhat of an idea what the problem is. And the details that were provided about the gay sex icons on the desktop is enough detail for me to know that I have seen this before. Not saying that there may not be more than that going on but at least this will be a start.

But I can see how taking computer advice from someone you don't even know could be risky but hey, what fun is life without risks?

I notice that the virus descriptions that electrolost posted both had to do with illegal downloading or hacking of games. Is this what you were doing? If so, maybe one of your gamer forums would be able to recognize your problem more easily.

Although, it seems like someone who is computer-sophisticated enough to hack game software ought to know what a registry is, so maybe you have a cyberstalker who socially engineered you?

Otherwise, either make a note of what you are doing or reformat the computer's operating system. Maybe you could use whichever computer in your house is still working while that is going on to calm yourself down. :)

Actually I think that was more of a confession on his part then a comment on your situation. :D

Not to scare you more, but receiving an e-mail from someone you know is not a guarantee of safety either. Many viruses will scan the address book of an infected computer and mail out viruses to everybody in your it, attaching a virus file that appears to be a funny video or something like that. If I receive anything from you in the next few days, it will be isolated and I will PM you to find out if you really sent it.

20 lashes with a wet noodle for you girl.

Previewing a file can also cause a payload to execute. Are you using web based e-mail, or POP? (POP would be an application like Outlook Express or Thunderbird used to download the mail)

my outlook address got put on about a million spam lists and i had to delete it. im stuck now with just a web based email. is that bad?

Just always treat any new email or attachment with suspicion as yospiff said a trojan can be attached to your address book. I have had a couple of incidents like this over the last couple of years and I am just passing my learned lessons along. And... beware of wet noodles!!
01/02/2009 12:25:19 AM · #46
hmmm. ok i will watch for wet noodles, and be aware. thanks again everyone:D

Out of curiosity, what antivirus program do you have? Was it the same one that "caught" this virus? There's a few out right now that pop up what appears to be an antivirus program saying it found something, but it's actually a cleverly designed way to get you to execute your own misery.

Spyware Guard 2008 is one of them. There's another one that fooled my boyfriend a couple weeks ago for a few minutes, but I can't think of its name, nor can he.

Edit to add another link: Misleading Applications

No, web based e-mail is just fine. i was just trying to determine how you had executed a virus attachment. More security is always good. Implementing some of the security suggestion myself and the others have offered will be a bit of a nuisance at first, but simply cutting off ActiveX and javascript applications from being able to run at will can reduce your risk immensely. You won't miss activeX, very few things besides Windows update use it. Many sites, including DPC require javascript to function, however it is easy to allow permanent permission for trusted sites.

BTW, nobody else in my family can use my PC because I have so much stuff that has to be given permnission to run before it will work. (I'm waiting for a Mac fan to now chime in with some advice!)
