| So I was 'window shopping' and passed by the camera section. D700 has a 300USD rebate (Here in Japan anyways) and I was thinking of selling off my D200 with accessories and putting up the cash for a D700. I was playing around with it at HIGH ISO levels and liked what it was doing. I love walking around Japan at night, but the D200 doesn't really do it for me at high ISO...but that alone shouldn't be a reason to put that kinda cash up for a new body. I also like the idea of going into a full-frame body so I can borrow lenses from a camera friend of mine. What do you say Nikon users? |

| Do it, you won't regret it. I too am looking at the D700 when taxes come back. |

| Go get it. You won't regret it!! The FF , high ISO & autofocus capability outclasses the D200. |

| I'm loving the cheering for DOING IT...but I need 'permission' to buy expensive gear. This camera is not out of my price range but it's something that needs to be discussed with my better half and she's not one for technology type stuff...anyways, she was asking "What's better than the D200 you bought less than a year ago?" So, I'm trying to explain things in ways she can understand. |

| Hmm, let's see. "Honey, the noise problem would go away, thus meaning I don't have to do as much editing on my night shots, which would mean I could then spend all that extra time doing nice things for you." |

Her BS meter is finely tuned to that...but nice try! |

| Dang...I was just looking around at more stores...I found a place selling at 600USD below other shops (Reputable shop...the only one taking advantage of people not having money AFTER Christmas...) AND they still offer the 300USD cash back. When the wife wakes up, there will be more talk. |

I'm just waiting for my D70s to break....
Sigh.....that could take a while....
I guess as much as I'd love a D700, I have trouble with getting rid of a camera that funtions better than I can expect it to and that has literally become an integral part of my life.

tell her you really want the D3, but it just makes better economical sense to go for the D700 right now. all the reasons mentioned above are enough to drop the cash. both these new FF bodies are amazing.

I want to get the D700, but how long do I wait before the price drops again?

I went from a D70s to the D700 a couple of months back and I am definitely with the "do it" crowd.
I justified it to my better half with the following reasons:
Higher resolution let me crop shots with more acceptable results
Full Frame + High ISO - better at doing night shots and street type photography in low light, she loves this kind of stuff, this helped
Lifetime - Pro body will have a better life, better long term investment, this was easier justified going from a D70 than a D200 though
Lifetime - More cameras will be going full frame in the future so to get one now would mean that all the lenses I buy for this camera from now on will be compatible with any upgrade I do 6 or 7 years down the line, though be careful mention upgrading a camera you haven't even bought yet!
To be fair to her though, she loves the fact that I do photography, I think it's because I'm a left sided IT geek sorta person and she sees it as me expressing my right sided creative side, which usually lives in hibernation.

Konbanwa, Heavyji - you say "I was thinking of selling off my D200 with accessories and putting up the cash for a D700."
Based on the accessories, how much more cash are you talking? Will you be retaining any of your existing equipment that can be used on the 700?
Also, to be kind of pedantic, what are you looking for out of the 700 that the 200 is really not giving you? And is that truly justifiable?

Absolutely justifiable...high ISO noise and 51 point AF system only to name a couple. Even if it were JUST that, it would be clearly justifiable.

Actually Heavyji has to answer that. By supplying a potential answer - well - you have potentially empowered him. I just think this kind of decision needs to be looked at as far as the real perceived differences on the part of the person using the equipment. Heavy already admitted that the high ISO is not justification, so I am hoping he seeks all of the justifications. You may be right but only he will know for sure. He also says he likes the idea of borrowing lenses from a friend. But again, are the photographs Heavyji is taking that dissatisfying, or is this a case of "want new gear"? Only Heavyji can answer this.

Just purchased another D200 as a backup. Scratched my head and thunked long and hard then came across an article where someone had stressed not to chase technology but rather become a better photographer with the equipment you have. It was also said that it would be a far better investment to upgrade your glass than to spend money on something that will be antiquated in 6 months. I'm looking at going semi-pro and thought it better to stick with a body I know and produces great results from the eye of the consumer. Us photographers are ridiculously anal when we look at each other's work focusing more so on the technical rather than the creative. In my opinion, though the D700 is touted to be the coming of the Messiah, the D200 was touted to be the same. Noise at night ...... Meh!!! For how often I shoot at night, NeatImage settles that out well enough. Another thing to consider is that Nikon has a tendency of changing all of the accessories when you change your body. Can you say "Opportunistic Money Grab"? The whole thing has really got out of hand.
Find me a company that will upgrade my sensor without changing my body and I'll sign up. Otherwise, the D200 has produced exceptional images for many of us. The task now is to become and exceptional photographer.
Check out Joey Lawrence, he made freakin incredible images by banging two rocks together. |

You can want it, but really.....it's not justifiable.
I get way too many really good shots, too often, with my D70s, to justify one.
If I sell enough work, I'll buy one from the spoils, but, justifiable?
Nah!

Reasons I would like a D700
High ISO performance is great and I don't have enough night shots worthy of working on.
FX-Format CMOS sensor
Live View modes
Some wonderful lenses to borrow that will help me expand my creativity (I hope)
I'm going through the manual. I knew when the D300 and D3 came out, I wasn't interested. However, the D700 has caught my attention. Still studying, considering...thinking...thinking...

Thanks to Ivo and NikonJeb for a bit of perspective there.
I've been salivating after one of those D700s, but a) I don't have the money and b) if I can't take pictures with a D200 then . . .
Nikon'll have something new by next Christmas and by the Christmas after that something even newer (I think they run at about two years per big shake). Get a D700 now and you'll want a super-K-one-one-seven in 2010. |
