Let me get this right....you are not part of the H to H side challenge. You never were part of the H to H side challenge. This side challenge has no effect on your life in any way, shape or form. Yet you come into this thread, and start suggesting that it would be "honouring" the 1000th challenge of DPC to NOT include it in the side challenge. I don't believe anyone asked for your opinion on what we should do did they?

Is that correct?

At least Limerick has a vested interest in the H to H and so she certainly has every right to be heard. You on the other hand are just being bossy and are trying to impose your will on others, in a situation that does not concern you in the least.

for crying out loud, how hard is it? enter or don't. it is not the end of the world.

All I want to know is if I dont enter how that effects the outcome of our round 3. I cant seem to get that answer. hahah. I guess I made a sad mistake saying why I dont want to enter but other then that if I dont enter it and round 3 being to-the-death now then how does that effect our round? Does that mean that my partner will automatically get a point? Does that mean his hard work wont count at all? Does that mean we both have to just wait for the next challenge announcements? What?

Hi Agnes. If you do not enter, there is no effect whatsoever on our H to H. The only time a point is earned is if both people enter the challenge. That is why I am not able to grasp why you and others so firmly are against have the Gem challenge count. If you do not like it, don't enter it. Just like Karmat said.

I will explain why. I think it might be a good idea. I dont want a big argument over it tho. hahah. Its "just" my personal opinion.

When I enter a challenge I like to have a subject to work with and to research and to make as good as I can (like Post It and Apple, etc). If it was just me and you and you said "lets go take a picture of a onion" and see who has the best picture then I would know...

1. To make sure the onion was in the picture
2. To try and make it different
3. To think of some way of making it jump off the page etc etc.

When its a free study? Here is what I think...

1. Its my camera against your camera
2. Its my prop money against your prop money
3. Its my studio equipment against your studio equipment
4. Its my models against your models
5. Its my location against your location etc etc.

To me a free study isnt a photography challenge about creativity and turning a simple onion (for example) into a work of art but it now becomes a challenge about who has the biggest handicap.

I feel that way about all free studies and why I dont enter them even for the month much less for this special event. I want a photography challenge. I dont care if its about emotions and taking a picture of happines or sadness as long as I have something to work with besides "anything you want from anywhere" (and now anytime).

I know you guys love them and that is cool. I am happy to know I do have the option if I ever want to enter something in a free study but to me those are more for fun and not really something to do with challenging myself.

I still might enter just so I can move on with this tho. I am waiting to hear on a few things so I can put something together. If I dont make it tho I will let you know.

Unfortunately that is totally incorrect. The way you go about your regular challenges is nobodies business but your own of course. But the assumptions you make about FS challenges is totally, completely wrong.

I could easily say that your camera is newer then mine with more up to date technology. (the camera has nothing to do with it anyways, check out Joey Lawrence's portfolio and see what he did with a tiny point and shoot against people with pro cameras)

I have no prop money and do not have any props. I cannot afford any.

I do have some studio equipment that I bought literally 15 years ago. Now your speedlight simply taken off of your camera does more then my old studio equip.

I do not hire models, and do not generally use them in a challenge unless it is a portrait challenge. Portraits entered in a FS do very poorly.

Location, sure, I am in the middle of Canada (no mountains here though!) In the middle of winter. Everything is dead and covered in snow. I still make an effort to compete against those Iceland landscapes and do pretty well. Besides, this particular FS you can use your photos from any trip you ever took, anywhere in the world!

Photography is NOT about the camera or equipment or even the location. It has to do with what is between your ears! Your job as the photographer is to capture the attention of the viewer with your choice of subject. Help to make them see something either that they have never seen before or to see something in a way they have never seen it before. That will make you successful. All the equipment and models in the world, even if you were in Hawaii would not help you if you cannot do that.

GOOD.

How do you think he is going to feel about all this stupidly petty arguing. I am ashamed of all this bitching, whining and petty crap.

Go out and do what you do best, take a friggin photograph that makes you proud.

Hi LydiaToo It looks like my FS shot may break 6, barely! 6.09xx right now. How is your entry doing?
03/04/2009 08:08:16 PM · #783
Ok, my photos are doing well, so I'm nice and happy and will butt in where I don't belong! (no, this doesn't mean you should go vote my photos down so I shut up... :)

I'd say, don't give anyone a hard time if they don't want to participate in the head to head with the hidden gem challenge. the problem, as I see it, is your competing with someone's past--not their present. If I had done the head-to-head, I'd have no past, because it's rare that I saved originals. Plus, if someone has really grown over the past year, they're at a disadvantage going against someone who's been good for many years. they might equals now, but all of the sudden the newly grown person has 1 week to come up with the equivalent of someone's "the best of 5 years worth of stuff".

ok! I'll go see if my score dropped now.

Wendy, please do not miss the point. In the H to H you can chose which challenges you enter. So why try and exclude this challenge from counting for those that want to participate? If you do not want to enter it, then don't, there is no penalty for not entering it. I hate entering open challenges mid-week. But right now I am in the DPCO as well so I have to, but I am not running to Barry asking him to stop counting the open challenges all of a sudden because it might hurt me in the head to head!

You make a lot of sense basssman7. I do agree with you in some parts of what you said. It should be about what is between the ears. hahah. I really should take the same approach to each challenge even without a subject and I am doing that right now. Racking my brains with ideas to hopefully stand out and finally execute. hahaha.

I really like crafts tho to and for me personally I usually get my inspiration from something I have already seen. Like in Post Its. I didnt come up with a folded flower. I just found and read the tutorial for the flower and came up with the idea to enter that and display it nice. For the apple I didnt come up with the painting with light technique myself but just how to display the apple when I tried the technique.

Here is another example. I used to draw a lot for my husband. He liked roll playing with little figures years ago he wanted me to draw and he had a friend of his that liked my drawings. He was a guy that was eventually hired by Disney and he gave me some critique once. He said I am one of those artist that can really draw anything I 'see' and 'copy' it pretty well but that doesnt have the ability to really come up with originality. In other words if he told me to draw anything I wanted I couldnt come up with something but I could copy very well a still life of a fruit bowl. hahah. It isnt a "bad thing" but its just a different kind of artist. I guess I am the same way with photography. I get frustrated because I cant "copy" those beautiful aurora skies or glaciers in Alaska so I feel empty inside and feel I cant really compete with those that can. But give me a subject to work with and then I can let my creativity flow. Free studies really give me no inspiration. Nothing to research. Nothing to transpose into something better and bigger or prettier. You know what I mean? I guess its like a mind block. So from there to me it really becomes the location or camera or studio ability and that was what I meant by that.

Where I disagree in what you said is that I was just using you as an example of the one person I was talking about. In reality I am up against hundreds in a free study from all over the globe. I could really go to National Geographic and do that which is fun but not all that challenging to me artistically. In a way tho I think you are right in a lot of ways.

I shouldn't really just give up on this. This is by far the biggest challenge for myself to do in a way and I am going to give it my best try. I do have a great idea. I have a few really. Its just a matter of getting it done like I see it in my head. I think it will be something that catches the viewer and will be something they either havent seen before or maybe see it in a different way. So now I am hoping I can enter and thanks for helping me see that and not just getting mad at me. :=)

I still dont think tho that this should count for the side challenge...hahahaha. I do still agree with the reasons HawkeyeLonewolf gave for that but I am going to try my hardest to enter now just to get over my own milestone. Maybe for to long I let that one guys critique stay with me and didnt even try to create rather then just copy someone elses idea in a different way. Now I will try and see what happens and if it doesnt work at least I tried. The "only" way I will not enter is if I cant physically get off my picture but I am going to give it my best try!

I want to apologize to every body. I am sorry for taking up so much space here on this. I guess I am just in one of those moods.

Vawendy I do agree with you very much.

JulietNN I am sorry for taking up the space on this but in the end it really helped me think about something I never really thought about for years about my artistic ability so it was worth it to me and I hope you can understand. I did read that Barry was ok earlier to.

I am done with this now. hahah. So sorry every one and to Barry who will have to read this book. :=(

Heck, if that's the case, no problem! Pick the ones you want to enter and let others pick what they want. Ok, I'm done. (and someone did give me a 4 after I made the last post...) :)

Me too. Now we can get on with the fun part of this side challenge...taking pictures and trash talking!!!

I can safely say that I will never get a ribbon in the Gem challenge. So I want to double dog dare (wolf dare? lol) Agnes to see if either one of us can get a ribbon during our upcoming H to H!

You know what? Wouldnt it be something after all of this whining if I did ribbon? hahahah. I can just imagine the comments! hahah.

Get out your wolves and your eagles and your snowy mountain caps basssman7! I dont care now! I am going to try to kick your butt from here to the aurora skies. (Never mind the word "try". I AM going to!) With that you can really be assured!

Great now the thread is back to normal!
03/05/2009 01:48:41 AM · #794
Stats have been updated on the spreadsheet. Now we just need Barry to announce who plays who and when....
03/05/2009 04:00:49 AM · #795
Ok, firstly very sorry about the delay in posting. As I said, I've had troubles with both my internet connection and my computer so I've hardly been around and not been able to post. Thanks to everyone who asked after me :-)

OK, I've updated the spreadsheet here I've not got time right now to post the scores in this thread so go and have a look ;-). If you can't see it, shout me :-) I've also got a few tabs to add to my spreadsheet too (round 3 and round 2 highest losers) but I'll try and do that either tonight or over the weekend. If anyone sees any mistakes with either their scores or anything else can you let me know urgently :-)

The main development is that basssman7 beat jasonlprice 2-0 with his two (brilliant) wolf shots. We have two round 2 matches complete so far and by a happy coincidence the winners, basssman7 and limerick are now playing each other. That match officially begins with the 100 years old challenge.

As for whether the hidden gem counts (or any other challenge for that matter) it will count. If you really really really don't want a particular challenge to count for the head to head then I will exempt that challenge for your match only provided both you and your partner agree and let me know. But I'd rather you didn't as it defeats the spirit of the tournament for me. I'll still count it for averages though.
03/05/2009 06:59:59 AM · #796
basssman7 it was confirmed last night that I will be in the Gem challenge. At least I am 99.9% sure about that. For the 100 year old that is still iffy right now. I will keep you posted.

Thank you SoulMan1978 but no need to exempt here. So sorry you are having so many problems tho. :=(

SoulMan1978 I went through 2 computers last year. It was horrible. A bat would have been nice I agree. hahah.

Basssman7 if I get my shot off as planned you would be better off not entering the Gem because you are GOING DOWN!

03/05/2009 05:37:52 PM · #800
I phoned and checked. there are no 100 year old wolves, so I am likely going to pass on that challenge. ;)

I think you should be spending more time taking that fab shot, and less time on here....you will need it if you want to beat my Gem image! ;) hehehe
