$1.61 at the Wal-Mart gas station here in NE TX. Not bad, not bad at all. :) |

so would it be possible(if not logical in some peoples opinions)to make all gas everywhere the same price? or would that be like global communism...
edit: the different types of gas would be different prices, just to verify

Yeah, well the reason you pay over $6.00 is to pay for your national health insurance and other social benefits that we don't have. You pay at the pump; we pay at the doctor's office. Either way, we all pay. |

Guess what my friend in Venezuela was paying last year - 12 cents a gallon! It could be up to 13 cents by now, but I doubt it. He's not there anymore; so I can't find out what it currently is. |

Another point for those thinking the US has cheap gas. Many of us have to drive over 20 miles one way just to get to work! Stop and go traffic...if it were $6/gallon, we would never be able to work farther than a couple of miles from home.
We saw gas Friday for $1.54!! (And I wasn't driving...the luck!!) |

No, if fuel were $6/gal, the demand for effective and affordable mass transit would be deafening. People wouldn't drive 6000lb V8 gas-guzzlers on their solo commutes and they'd drive much slower.
I know many people in Europe that live 20+ miles from where they work. They ride the train. |

I wish the people here (Dallas) would have had the foresight to have mass transit. If I want to ride the bus somewhere, it's almost 15 miles to the stupid bus station!! And we don't have trains, which stinks! I'd love to have the option to use mass transit and I hate the gas-guzzlers (I call them "buses") too! We have a beater, piece of crap '91 Honda that gets 37 mpg! Love it, but it's not the safest with all of the huge vehicles on the road. Hubby got sandwiched last fall and actually got hurt. (Very scarey.) Ok, getting off of my soapbox.

Dropped by a dime over the weekend to $1.69 at many stations here in Winchester VA. |

It's a product of the "car culture" that has been the basis of North American society since Ford began his first assembly line. Eisenhower's interstate system just compounded it to unnatural levels.
I mean, there IS a real distance problem, but cities grew based on the interstates, not decent mass-transit and rail infrastructures, which could have been easily implemented had anyone wanted to. |

It looks like it was still 12 cents a gallon in Venezuela as of Friday. I heard rumors there is under $2 gas in San Diego but we usually have some of the highest prices in the USA. No complaints here though since I commute about 2 miles on a 70mpg motorcycle. |

How can I find out what gas prices were in 1975? I'm curious how much it was when I first started driving, lol! |

THIS photo looks like it's from around that time.
I do remember in about 1977 driving away from a gas station in my '67 Camaro SS because gas was 80 cents a gallon!

I've watched with dry amusement as the price climbed while I traveled back north this weekend:
Gettysburg, PA - $1.89
Scranton, PA - $2.09
Binghamton, NY - $2.19

I remember getting 3 gallons of gas for $1 as a teenager in the early 70's (Michigan). Wasn't driving yet, but had a dirt bike that was being used a lot. :-) |

It surprises me that train travel isn't as popular as it should be in the US.
The Carbon Footprint from trains is tiny compared to flying, and there's no better way to get around if you ask me.
I get on the train at Aberdeen in Scotland, and can go down the East coast to Kings Cross in London, it takes the good part of 8-9 hours, but the scenery is so fantastic, and you can sleep all the way too, trains are very comfortable.

How do you get around once you get to your destination?
So many areas here are spread out. Many places I go to for visiting family and friends have no public transportation at all within a couple hundred miles. I suppose I could take a train to the nearest major city, then rent a car. I don't think getting a rental car from train service is an easy transaction either.
Even here at home, the train runs north and then west if I wanted to use it to get to work - total trip time is 2.5 - 3 hours with two train changes. To drive it is 1.25 hours. |

Lowest i have seen this week around here was $1.85 which is lowest it has been for a long time. Filled our Mini Van for under 50 dollars for the first time ever. I wish it wasn't winter. I would love to go fill up my Honda Scooter for less than a Dollar. |
