Is the wide screen frame now in vogue?

There have been a 1000 topics on frames since Ive been a part of dpc (registered 2002)..

But I'm seeing a trend lately of the black bars on top/bottom , I'd call it a wide screen framing effect (much like when viewing a dvd in 16:9 ratio)

I personally don't mind it-- but it seems to have become popular of late--

Any opinions>?

thats what I was asking, this is just an observation on my part, so does it matter to you when viewing/voting on a photo-- I already stated I dont mind it.

Cp you have been around dpc long enuf to know that frames on a picture sometimes count when it comes to voters-- just seeing a trend-- looking for others opinions..

I've had both good and bad reaction to the use of the "wide screen" framing. I like it on some images, but only when it really adds to the feel of the image.
Three stellar examples that immediately spring to mind: (none of them mine)
by eyewave (one of the first that I remember using them)
by mpeters (somehow i think the framing adds a high-impact element to this)
by dstrohl (it really was a still from a movie set)

These all end up having a "movie still" type of feel to them.

That said - there are still a LOT of people here that don't like frames at all, and they are quick to point that out during voting.
Use at your own peril risk ;O)

Well the irregular vertical border isn't catching on. :/ :P

Let me expand the question for you.

Does it matter that it seems to be a trend?

i don't think it make any sense

Yep, I've noticed the trend and I think it's great. Top and bottom matts in particular seem to make some images pop.

Why not?

Many times an image can use something to set it apart from the neutral 'grey' bg that is used for all DPC challenge entries. A single pixel, up to a 10 pixel border, isn't enough at times to give an image the canvas that it needs to display that image in the best way possible.

In the cowboy image that roba posted, the use of a wide border (ie wide screen frame) really works. There was obviously a compositional choice the photographer made in making the crop as it is.

The other two posted by roba don't really benefit that much from the wide screen frame IMO...not enough separation.

You know what it is..... Gangsta clothing. OK, I'll explain. Baggy pants came in vogue, mostly from the jail's 'one size fits all' style of covering up their denizens and once a few of 'em got turned loose, it spread like wildfire!

So, I take an image to a lab to get printed. Well, there are very few custom labs left, so I have to settle for mechanized printing where a machine makes the decisions. It only has the aspect ratios that were programmed into it and my image will get the ends cropped off, messing up the image. What I do to battle this is add 'canvas' to the top and/or bottom or both so that the print can be printed full width. Then I custom matte it in a custom frame.

I'm sure I"m not the only one who has this problem. At Smug Mug, they at least have a button to push for "no crop" and they will add the canvas for you. So, then you end up with all these images running around with either black or white added canvas. Most like black so that you can see where to trim the image if you do. Some images really look good with that extra canvas and then they end up getting to keep it. Also, there is the issue of custom frames, (for the non-matters) They are pricey and many don't know where to get them, so some of these canvas added images so they can be printed at a standard size also end up in a standard sized frame with no matte.

Once enough people see it, more people like it, so it does indeed become a trend easily enough. Soon the added canvas pix that look good that way start turning up all over the place. Unfortunately, many images that it DOESN'T enhance do too, but, unlike baggy, saggy pants, the new trend DOES look good on some image. Use with discretion!

that's my story. (I might stick to it too! fora a while anyway)

Personally, I hate it.

All this wide-screen sh*t and the damn programming/film doesn't fit the screen anyway?

How stupid is that?

You cannot get a decent TV any more that's NOT widescreen, and at least half of what's out there to watch doesn't utilize the friggin' screen????

I hate it on my TV, I certainly DON'T want it here to view the images that the rest of everybody is already bitching about being too small.

Ahh.....

I feel *MUCH* better now!

I used it on one of my shots to simply fill the frame out due to the size guidelines
