I couldn't find anything about this specifically, although I'm sure it's out there (I'm on a very slow computer today, so only went 2 pages back in a search).

What I'd like to suggest is changing the wording of "Mark as Helpful" for comments to "Mark as Appreciated".

Not only does the use of the word Appreciated imply that it was also helpful, but it's a broader meaning that allows comments that have nothing to do with a critique to be marked by people that are otherwise put off by the wording.

Further, I'd also love to see some kind of extra optional private message system attached to marking this box, as in some kind of pop-up (that you can turn on or off in your preferences), that would allow you to write a short reply to thank a commenter or respond to that comment in some way without having to comment on your own photo and clutter up the comment area.

Just some thoughts.

I like that idea...

Well, if its going to be changed I don't agree with 'appreciated' and think many comments are helpfull though maybe not appreciated (pointing out errors etc).

Maybe something like 'comment read' or even better a drop down box that can include a choice of the level of gratefulness and maybe profanities ;)

I like the idea of that change.

I have posted the idea before that we "score" each comment. The score would be reflected as a statistic. My scoring idea - though was not "appreciated" in this community though ;)

I like your suggestions...profanities relieve so much tensions:)) No, really, a good idea:)

Here's the thread on this topic that I started before

Personally, I like the idea of checking a comment as "READ" â€Â¦ then scoring it accordingly if you want - but some find this altogether useless.

This has been discussed quite a bit in the past, but worth bringing up again. It has also been suggested to add the checkbox: "Mark as read" for those of us who simply use the feature to achnowledge that we read the comment and to be able to filter/sort by that.

edit: What he^ said - except I don't agree with those that think it's would be useless - because I would use it. :)

I'm a bit disturbed by scalvert's (an SC member) assertion that the helpful comment thing is meaningless anyway. If that's the case, why is it still there?

What I'm mainly trying to do is drum up a way to get people to give commenters a little more recognition. I think that if they do, people would be motivated to comment more. I know that when I get a PM from someone for a comment I've left, it gives me a bit of a boost, and I'm more apt to leave another comment in the future.

I just hate the thought that comments might be taken for granted, and the current "mark as helpful" box simply doesn't have enough to it, so I made my proposal.

The idea of scoring, I think, was rejected as it was because people know that things like that tend to just be abused for the statistics. That's why I added an idea to implement a pop-up box for responding personally to a comment. That way, you can say whatever you like in response, whether it's to thank someone, try and explain your shot better, or rant a little bit about it.

Of course, I guess the possibility of it being abused by people that get angry about anything other than "This is fantastic!" on their photos would be kind of high.

I've often thought that 'appreciated' would sound better than helpful, for example being told that your shot is pretty isn't exactly helpful but everyone appreciates being told that. It's just a better, wider term.

There have been times when I have gotten the gumption to leave what I perceive as REALLY helpful comments. Meaning I find something I like in a photo and something I thinik can be improved.

I think it would be cool to have some sort of award for commenters in some way - a virtual icon each month or something - (given, I don't comment nearly as much as many, but the site is better with comments IMO).

I agree completely, this is soooooo needed. In my opinion the more feed back and the clearer it is the better for everyone. Give the power to the people!

I do like the idea of being able to respond to comments during the challenge while not giving away who you are (i.e. which photo is yours.)

I would love to see more choices besides "helpful" ... sometimes you want to mark a comment "appreciated" or "read" ...

I prefer a black dot with no clutter of words for explanation.
If clicked the black dot would turn invisible as expression of acknowledgement.

I love a thread that lets me show off my greatest (sarcastic) creativity:

Lose the words, keep the checkbox. Let the commenter interpret what it means if the box is marked marked or not as they will.

Almost spot on, just need the 'die troll' and 'if only I lived closer to you I'd be round in a flash to.....' buttons ;)

A check box where you can add your own text would be interesting, just check the box and blast away with your comment about their comment which they can respond to with their comment about your comment which you can respond to with your comment about their comment......well you get the idea

Hmm, it's also missing, "OMG, you're the only one that *GETS* me!"

How about you just assume that all comments are appreciated unless you check the "shove it" button.

You're asking humanity to assume the best.

Thought I'd bring this to the forefront again, as I really believe that this, or other ideas brought forward by other people in this thread, need to start being seriously considered.

Made the same suggestion almost 3 years ago.
