This will definitely be a challenge where if I accidentally get something over the week I'll use it, but won't be shooting specifically for it. Just thinking of trying to purposely come up with an idea for this make my brane owie. |

I love to do this one, but not sure if I will be well enough to shoot.
I also have not taken many images with the 'new' camera, so do not know for sure what to set it at.
Still learning, when I have a good day. |

I'm sure you will blow us away with the beauty of your image! You have alot more talent than many here, and we all learn so much from you and how you always come through with something unique and heart warming.

Just realized my problem...
I've been trying to do these challenges sober...
Excuse me, gotta go to the liquor store... |

I spent all day today working on the garage, trying to make space to set up, and still haven't gotten enough boxes emptied. By the time I get my workspace, the challenge will be over! :( |

I think an abstract emotion image would be some thing that does not portray a physical emotion (example person smiling or a baby laughing...) but a mental emotion (example empty bench would express loneliness, a balloon with a small childs hand holding onto it would be hope, or a beat up pair of sneakers would be hard work). At least thats what I get out of it. Of course if you don't think a empty bench is abstract enough for you throw in a crying clown flipping a flap jack while balancing on a unicycle ontop of it and no one is going to argue thats its not abstract enough.
definition of abstract from dictionary.com
abstract:thought of apart from concrete realities, specific objects, or actual instances: an abstract idea.

Hmmmmm. I think I have an idea. But whether or not I can pull off a challenge-worthy photo of my idea remains to be seen. Prob'ly not. . .like almost every other week lately :( One can always hope tho.
And Deb, I do vote for a reshoot of some sort of your Ode to Joy. I love that photo too!

Maybe I'm getting it wrong, but I think the photo is supposed to be abstract. If you can see it's a bench, then it's not abstract. |

I concur with this opinion. I must admit shamelessly that in my first challenge on DPC, I had submitted an image that wasnt abstract by any means. It was the close up of a face with a nice texture in the background... and I owe that entry to gross lack of knowledge.
I have learned a little since, and now my criterion for an abstract image is on these lines: "if I can recognize a real world, tangible object in the image from its shape or texture or relative size, in whole or in part, it is -not- abstract." Example: two boats on overexposed sand, howmuchever great the shot is technically, isnt abstract to me as long as I can see and point right away: 'hey, thats a boat's picture!'. On the other hand, if the picture was of something else, mostly intangible (exceptions apply), like a shadow, or light pattern, that 'suggest' the shape or form of a boat indirectly, it is definitely abstract for me.
But this is -just my opinion-, and may change as I learn more.
ETA: spell check.

Will this sort of thing meet the challenge in anyone's opinion? |

It does, according to my opinion. It is a very attractive abstract image.

I know that abstract doesn't do well with challenge voters. So I would think that you would have to be able to recognize the subject, in an abstract way. Like Deb's 'Ode to Joy.' The title is going to be critical in this challenge.
[eta] .......
.
I would expect this one to do badly--too abstract. No emotion.

I have three kinda cool ideas for this but they would all require good editing skills, an area in which I am severely lacking. Ain't that just the way.

This would qualify, for me. Because I can recognize the setting & the subject. The mist/fog/clouds make it feel emotional, but no specific emotion. |

But surely an abstract can mean many things. Like if I did a cows heart with a knife sticking out of it, it would be a broken heart. Isnt that abstract? |

If I can recognize abstract qualities to the image, it's not the same to me as an abstract image. Your picture would be a photorealistic image conveying an surrealist quality. To me. Maybe I'm crazy, but how would I know it was a cow's heart? [eta] & would that make a difference? An abstract image can result if you crop the subject to remove all context, but then often you loose all emotion as well. Rorschact images are abstract, conveying abstract emotion, but only when the viewer begins the process of describing what they see. I think SC is giving us more & more difficult challenges. I like it.

That's exactly the sore of thing I was thinking of for this challenge, but now after reading this thread I'm not so sure. Apparently there are many people who think it has to be an abstract image and not an abstract concept. |

probably an abstract concept could be a surreal image(or something of similar) not an abstract |

That might be because the challenge description says "create an abstract photograph." Photograph = image. Photograph <> concept. In my literal-minded opinion ;-) |

You know I love cutout work, I think that is pretty abstract. Or maybe it isnt as I understand it? |

Please don't take offense, for none is intended, but my inquiring mind wants to know what would be an excample of a concept that is not abstract? I can't think of one. |
