Only slightly OT - but doctors have recently infected a 6 year old girl with HIV to save her from cancer.
Pretty awe inspiring stuff. |

I am looking forward to the day when this thread can disappear into the archives because the subject is moot.
Still, it's nice to see this CNN article headlined
With Hawaii and Illinois, U.S. crosses a same-sex marriage mark
As they say, "it's a dramatic shift in a short period of time..."

The other day I was reflecting on the fact that I have friends who threw rocks at Stonewall. Now I bring my legally wedded wife to work and introduce her to everyone, and nobody bats an eye. From there to here in my lifetime (and I'm not really that old yet). We live in amazing times. |

I do believe that in Canada, same sex marriages were recognized at the Federal in 2005, and as early as 2003 in Ontario.
...and to think, we have not all gone to Hell in a handbasket yet! :O)

Given that we seem to know all the same people despite living 3000 miles apart, this does not surprise me at all. |

Why? This thread should have velvet ropes around it as a permanent fixture on the home page. Reading it from the beginning is like going back in time and seeing the mosquito slowly entombed in amber. Its historic. And there are others that will follow provided the DPC universe's big crunch doesn't happen first.

What fun would bowling be if the pins weren't set up again? *IF* it passes, watch for a Federal judge to strike this idiot law down very quickly. |

with respect to the NFL hopeful Michael Sam coming out, this is a fantastic commentary and puts things in quite the perspective:

Which Way Will Arizona Go?

I know these feelings run deep. So, since the states are the laboratories of democracy, perhaps it is time to let one of them establish itself as a Christian homeland, perhaps in a semi-arid part of the West, sort of a Christian version of Israel, except Christians would be the permanent majority.
The stores would be closed on Sunday, everyone turns the other cheek, gives strangers the coat off their back, proudly says Merry Christmas, dines with the underclass, and no business need explain why they're OK serving individual gays with multiple partners, but not monogamous gay couples. |
FWIW in later news Gov. Brewer vetoed the Arizona bill ... |

What do you expect from a state that wouldn't acknowledge Martin Luther King day until threatened with the loss of the Super Bowl in Phoenix five years later......
In 1992, HOW many years after MLK's actions spurred the Civil Rights Act????
Yeah......that little piece of legislation came down in 1964.

Well, it was going to be bad for business, and Arizona would likely have lost the 2015 Super Bowl. We must have our priorities, you know. Football and a fat bank account both take precedence over God.

So according to Brewer, Jesus was way out of line when he excoriated the money lenders in the temple? |

Chuck D and PE let 'em have it for that one.
What bothers me is that I've got a lot of friends in AZ. A lot of progressive friends of all stripes and orientation. They all lashed out in rage at their legislators through different social networking sites, often crediting their companies for their shared disgust of the bill. But they all fought it under the same flag: It's bad for business.
That was the wrong stance. No one inside AZ had to make that case -- the NFL and super bowl committee was all that was needed to make that case. I wish the people of AZ had fought it on the grounds that it was an outright bigoted attempt to enable discrimination. The bill has been struck down and everyone can release a big sigh of relief because nobody had to talk about the real issues. The all-mighty dollar was the get-out-of-jail-free card. We can ignore the elephant in the room. Disgusting. |

The sad thing about this comment is that it is closer to the truth than we might care to admit.
Any attempts at civil discussion are seemingly summarily dismissed, and it is only when financial considerations are factored in that issues such as this as discussed.

I just reread sfalice's first post in this thread, probably for the first time in 6 years. The 2004 quote she used from the other thread is prescient, and foreshadows exactly the dominoes falling in courthouse after courthouse right now.
Also, I was reminded of Phyllis and Del, two amazing ladies that both Alice and I had the honor to know. They were class acts, both of them. |

I don't read this at all... but I see it pop up.
SERIOUSLY?!?! You are all STILL discussing this and haven't reached a conclusion?
I suspect then, that... you never will.
And it's time to give it up.
Carry on...

The discussion here isn't about reaching a conclusion. It's to note the legal developments state by state, and how they'll impact other states. |

This report about Florida's gay Marriage Ban makes for interesting reading.
As the article in the Christian Science Monitor says, among other things,
The cases are now beginning to arrive at the Supreme Court for a potential final examination of the same-sex marriage issue, perhaps as early as next year.
Currently, 19 states and the District of Columbia recognize same-sex marriages, while 31 states ban such marriages by statute, constitutional amendment, or both. Lawsuits have been filed challenging the bans in all 31 states.
âThe institution of marriage survived when bans on interracial marriage were struck down, and the institution will survive when bans on same-sex marriage are struck down,â Hinkle wrote. âLiberty, tolerance, and respect are not zero-sum concepts.â
The judge added: âThose who enter opposite-sex marriages are harmed not at all when others, including these plaintiffs, are given the liberty to choose their own life partners and are shown the respect that comes with formal marriage. Tolerating views with which one disagrees is a hallmark of civilized society.â
