i met a woman over the weekend who officiates weddings at a open house for a makeup artist i know. She mentioned when she gave me her cards that if I referred her to anyone that it not be same sex marriages. She was telling me that that whomever certified her required her to take an oath not to marry same sex couples.

I didn't really push the issue, she seemed like a nice lady and i got the impression that while she was religious it wasn't her choice not to preside over a same sex marriage, since she kind of gave a shrug like, "I'm just doing what they require me to do".

the whole thing struck me as odd.

Maybe part of the problem is the infatuations with weddings. All the pomp is kind of overblown, right? If you take the formalities out of the wedding itself and just leave marriage, maybe fewer homophobic people get scared off.

The goofiness of weddings is almost as goofy as the fear of gay marriage itself. The so-called traditions like a ring costing 900% of what you can afford and the dress costing more than your first 2 cars, and the brides's family remortgaging their house for 1 day of silliness are kind of silly IMHO.

Just take 2 people who love each other, give them a license to marry ... and have a party. If you want it to be religious, have a party at your church.

A realistic look at weddings =)

I wonder what she would have done had she received a request from two of my friends, one of whom is named Carol and the other Rachel... would she have automatically assumed that they were both females and rejected their request.

That would prove interesting since there are names that are given to both males and females...names like Carol, Erin, Ariel, Bailey and the list goes on.

I am ever so glad that we have evolved past that in this country and that same sex marriages have been legal for over a decade already.

I would have handed the cards back and said my professional organization asks that I not refer anyone who doesn't treat all human beings with equal respect and dignity. Maybe with a little shrug.
