I've got my fingers crossed that the Obama wave will take out Proposition 8. |

What will you do if it is voted down? Are any groups organizing for an eventual loss? |

Looks like 8 will pass...
I can not believe the failure of California! The sanctity of marriage is found in the love shared between the two HUMAN BEINGS in love, give them the rights the rest of us enjoy! Tonight the United States and California stepped further away from racism yet the great State of California has consecrated discrimination! I am embarrassed to be a native Californian.

It looks bad for prop 8 at the moment, but realize the late vote was swayed by massive amounts of money from the LDS and other out of state money spreading fear and confusion with "what if" scenarios that frankly scared alot of people of faith. This is not the end of this particular story. The tide of history is with the acceptance of people who differ from the average, the rights of all people to the legal recognition of all rights that are granted to any person will be upheld, if not tomorrow, then soon. |

Wow, I thought with the wave of positiveness about Obama and his change platform, it would sway some into thinking more freely about the respect of human beings. Boo to Arnie for not standing up and backing the no side. Idiot! |

It's too early to tell on Prop 8, as the margin is something like 200,000 with only about 23% of the vote counted, and those do not include any votes from San Francisco, Alameda, or Los Angeles Counties.
Update: now with about 26% of the vote counted, the percentage just closed from 55-45 to 53-47 ... I'm trying to get to the Secretary of State's website for direct info. |

But I believe he supports gay "civil unions". He's one of many hung up on the semantics. |

My view is that he had to toe a certain line on the issue in order not to get absolutely buried in his campaign. |

I dunno, I get the feeling that in his weighing of civil rights against his religious beliefs where the two are in conflict, the scales tip toward the civil rights. I may be wrong, it's just a gut feeling. I guess we'll see over the next few years, eh? |

That's what I mean, he's probably more for gay marriage that he had to say he was during his campaign. |

Just curious, as a straight person am I allowed to get one of these civil unions, or are they just for the folk that Hitler gave the pink triangles to? |

BrennanOB - What are you asking? From your statement, it seems like you're jealous that you didn't get a pink triangle too. What IS a pink triangle, and who did Hitler give them to? |

Assuming you're not being intentionally insulting and your question is genuine, sure, go ahead and "get one of them civil unions" Ã la Adam Sandler. Why not. Make a mockery of what constitutes matrimony between two people in love. It'll make you proud. I suppose you'll change your mind pretty quick once it comes to be recognized for what it is, marriage. |

"Obama opposed the California amendment and endorses the concept of broader rights for same-sex couples." From this article.

Pink triangle was the symbol that homosexuals were forced to wear in german concentration camps, along with the yellow star denoting jewish ancestry, red triangle for socialists, ect. There were alot of them each with that odd graphic quality that the Nazis loved.
Like the word queer, the triangle has gone from a badge of shame to one that some folks wear proudly.
And my intent in bringing it up, is to point out that this is discriminatory, a "separate but equal" system.

Well thats good to know, and had it been an option twenty years ago I would have taken it. I would prefer to think that I would have walked during the Selma bus strike, or that I would have hidden Anne Franke. I don't like being told I have the right to access to certain rights and privileges because of my genetic makeup.
As to "changing my mind pretty quick", what makes you think that Louis? I was married in 1988, and will remain so until the day I or my wife dies. My vows were to my wife, not to God, they are not threatened by any others, whatever their sexual orientation making the same sort of promises to each other. |

Well, I would assume you don't want a civil union to a partner of the same sex. It was implied by your question. If you are talking about a civil union to a member of the opposite sex, then your question is, I assume, ironic, and my sarcasm inappropriate. |

My point is it shouldn't make any difference in the eyes of the law if the person I loved was the same gender, race,or faith as I am or not. I asked if "Civil unions" were strictly intended for gays or if this is going to be the term for secular marriage, because if I were to marry today, I would feel morally obliged to marry under the laws that are reserved for those who are seen as not being worthy of "the sacrament of marriage". There ought to be no discrimination in who has access to which legal rights based upon religious faith, or genetic makeup. It just isn't American.
