went up to the park and got some more pukeko pics today but they're still not right.....aren't getting the right settings on the camera for them. Would appreciate some advice please.
1st pic - manual, no flash, 1/1000, F3.2, ISO 100
2nd pic - auto, no flash, 1/400, F4.0, ISO 100
thanks

I think these both look ok... looks like you were dealing with direct sunlight. What changes would you like to see?

Pukeko's are a pain to get right, slightly over cast days i find i get better results than on bright sunny days. Your pictures look good and if your not happy with them, nothing beats practice and trying different settings to get your desired results.
Heres a few of mine below.

Perhaps try for a close-in head shot?? If nothing else it ought to bring out feathers. But I suppose they don't hold still and pose much...
Maybe try to get lined-up and focused on one, even if moving, then when ready to trigger, make a little sharp whistle. It 'ought' to freeze for just a second. Most animals and birds will... but only for an instant. Good luck.

The couple of times that I tried to capture ducks (mallards mostly grey with the florescent greens and blues) I was also dissappointed in the results (same thing, I wanted more definition with the feathers.) I think it may be something about those colors of feathers. |

Definitely depends on the time of day you are taking them. The sun can be brutal at certain hours, but late in the day(and early) can really light up the feathers. |

or you could play a bit in photoshop to make it more dramatic...

:D that is dramatic isn't ....brings out the colours and textures of the pukekos beautifully. Is there any way to do that sort of thing and keep the grass looking green? I do have photoshop but haven't used it much as yet.

yes actually that was the first i did but the grass was sort of distracting (to me) from the birds... so desaturated only green and yellow channels ....to get green back and birds to pop a bit hit saturation and increase it to your liking here is a shot at it...i also took out shadows and sharpend Pukekos |

Where and what are pukekos? I have never heard of them even. They look a bit like turkeys. |
