Missouri felt the wrath of Ike this morning. Lots of localized flash floods. My police scanner was super busy with water rescues this morning. I stayed in the house rather then go take photos due to the conditions being too bad to risk. I hope everyone is OK.

Ok.. A few pictures from East Texas.. Palestine, Tx. About 3 hours drive north of Houston I beleive. I rode the storm out with some freinds that live there. The neigbors tree went down into my freinds backyard.. it fell on another tree and got hung up, sparing any damage to fences and or houses. We did some driving and saw many downed trees and traffic lights. There was reported 80mph wind gusts in our area. Most of the area lost power.. we got lucky, and had no power outages, or damage. However, the tree in the backyard will be tricky to get down without ruining the fence. I feel for the people in the Houston area.. and hope for a speedy recovery. High five to all the power guys out there working on the lines, and all the volunteers and rescuers!

Finally the internet and electricty has made it to my neck of the woods, however most of Houston is still with no electricity.

For those who havent been able to keep up with the Houston news, Galveston was hit pretty hard. A 20 foot surge hit the island wiping out Bolivar Peninsula. To give you an idea, there used to be 200+ houses in that area and now there are 2 houses standing. All was wiped out. It looks like one big sandy beach with a bunch of debri all around. The sand bed was about 2 feet deep.

Many have lost their homes, and we still dont know how many have lost their lives. Livestock in the area is dead everywhere. They said that they had found some livestock that were about to give up on life before they were freed from being up to the neck in water. Snakes and alligators have been reported in the area as roaming. I feel for those in that area.

We have a nice break from the humidity due to the nice cold front that we got yesterday, but it was nasty and humid on Saturday and sunday.

Here are a few photos that one of the local photographers was able to take. I live too far away from all that to be able to go there. Even the media was not allowed in back to Galveston until yesterday due to the situation. All I can say that I was very fortunate that all I sustained was some minor roof damage and fence damage and no electricity for 3 days. Others have it much worse than that. My heart goes out to those who lost their loved ones or their houses in this disaster.

Hey Jamie you think you could shrink those files down a bit.

I'm glad to see you rode the storm out though.

I would, but they are not my images. I did however make them links for whoever wants to view them.

I just walked by the JP Morgan Chase Building here in Downtown. This building is about 72 stories high and one side of the building had every single window blown out. There was yellow tape everywhere and shattered glass all over the floor. Lots of cops that barely let you around the area to observe. I was shocked at how much glass was on the floor being picked up. Lots of working crews everywhere here.

Wow, after seeing those pics I can't imagine Galveston's condition. Glad you and the other Houston folk rode out the storm OK. Hope things can get cleaned up and back to normal as soon as possible.

Update:

What a week. Still no power as of 2:30 PM Monday Sept. 22. Some neighbors have power, but no one on our side of the street.

House has some serious damage

Now just waiting for the adjuster to make an appointment. Could be a week or longer until that happens. I have a contractor all lined up, but can't do anything until the insurance settlement.

We are staying at my sister's house until we find a longer term solution. We figure we won't be back in the house until mid December.

Thanks for all the good thoughts and prayers. DPC is awesome!

Your neighborhood looks just like ours - damage-wise. We are the fortunate side of our street... the ones with power, but across the street and 6-8 blocks up, they are still without.

If you need to get anything out of your house, we can store plenty at ours.

Thanks Tommy. It all depends on the settlement. Hopefully they will cover the cost of storage while the house is being worked on. I have no idea what they will cover - the whole roof or just the damaged part, all the continuos wood floors or just the bedrooms, etc.

I appreciate the offer, I'll let you know.
