New (scary) report. 40% of the population stayed on Galveston Island! After 9:00 PM tonight, they will not respond to anyone for anything. There is a Last Resort shelter setup and anyone that stayed with children...they are looking into charging them with child abuse (I've been told on this one).

They have nothing in modern history to compare this even to because of the water.
DANG! Prayers, prayers, prayers....

That's an absolutely stunning and terrifying number. Where was that reported?

It was reported on KHOU.com station. It's a Houston TV station. The video from Galveston is getting really bad.

Linky from below...two of the four feeds are gone!

In the Dutch news they're talking about 25% of Galveston aren't evacuated (total of 58.000 people). Even it's less then Kat says, it's still 25% too much.

They just said it on Channel 11 here in Houston.
Not sure how they get that number, but thats what they say

Even more creepy news...they think it's going to hit earlier than previously anticipated based on satellite! Even LESS time for those that thought they could get out. There are 13-15 foot waves that haven't even hit the bay yet! The stranded tanker is experiencing 18 foot waves. This is so horrible!!

Center of the storm is only 115 miles away now!

My source at the moment...//www.maroonspoon.com/wx/ike.html Upper right corner.

Wind field is so large, over 200 miles, winds will be like a category 4 hurricane.

I'm in east texas..about 4 hours drive inland.. the storm is supposed to track through here.. we are expecting power outages and 12"+ of rain. I was hoping to take lots of photos, even during the storm.. but I don't have anything to protect my camera from the rain. I'm curious if anybody has any advice for protecting a camera from the rain? I've heard of people using plastic bags. Ziplocks? do you put them over the lens? Any other ideas? I can't get a hold of an actual housing before the storm gets here.

I've heard a shower cap, but don't think it will cut it for this, lol! It won't be that bad in Dallas (I don't think), so I'll see if there is anything to shoot up here.

Gallon ziplock bag. Cut a hole smaller than the end of your lens in the bottom at the crease. Push your camera into the bag and stretch the hole until it is around the edge of your lens. Tape the edge well. If using a tripod, just screw the tripod base attachment through the bag. You can open and close the back of the ziplock to gain access to the display or controls if you can't manipulate through the bag.

I've done it many times while out on the rivers.

Thanks guys =) Off to get some ziplocks. I did some searching on google.. and the best temp idea I see is with ziplocks.. I saw references to shower caps.. and even buying kids rain pants with elastic ankles and shove your lens through the leg of the pants. But I don't feel like hunting all over for those..so ziplocks will do. =)

Wind is picking up. I am shutting down this computer to remove the hard drives and lock them in the safe. Gotta protect those images that I haven't backed up lately! ;-)

Stay safe everyone.

The Gulf swallowed Galveston in the 1900 hurricane. I don't see how the people there could just ignore that history and stay there for this storm.
Prayers for them and all of you in the way of the storm tonight and tomorrow.

The weather channel is reporting that the greatest storm surge will hit at hight tide later tonight, right in the worst of the hurricane. They expect all of Galveston island to be under water at one time or another. The weather channel reporter on site says that people who stayed behind will regret it.

It is 9:30 their local time now. There are no more rescues now. Everyone is on their own, or them and whomever they are with. Hopefully the dumb are also very lucky, or we could see an overnight rise in the average IQ of the gene pool.

power just went out here. Crews won't be out until the winds are less than 40 mph

We'll be in the dark for a while

I heard this on the Weather Channel as well and that up to 24,000 decided to ride it out there in Galveston.

OMG! I wonder why evacuation wasn't mandatory there. Gonna be a long night for a lot of people.

Prayers!!
