I'm working on a photograph for a competition that has a bit of an odd theme... the theme is "Color" and color has to be the abstract subject of the photo. I need two images and they have to be shot on 35mm slide film. I came across this particular subject this morning and would like to have some feedback on this idea...

Thanks in advance :)

i like the colors and the focus but the 2 spots on the bowl are not pleasing, if you reshot it could you get those relections out???

Holy Water Batman!! The juxtaposition of the "in focus" reflection and the OOF copper/brass is attractive. Maybe an icon in the stained glass to bring it all together or Rosary beads to one side or the other of the Holy Water.

I left a comment on the shot... Also, I disagree about the two spots on the bowl. If you're going for abstract, the two spots can be used to nicely balance out the image and lead the viewer's eye around the frame.

I really like it John. I especially like the quality of the OOF (copper?) bowl. Exposure is perfect. Very nice.
I think a tighter crop might be beneficial, and possibly moving the viewpoint so the lines in the reflection are not horizontal.

I'm thinking a tighter composition is also in order. After thinking about it, I can also move my camera around and get reflections from any of the stained glass windows in this chapel.

I also plan to work THIS IDEA as well with the same subject...

was about to post that you might try reversing the focus, but i see you sort of did in the 2nd one. i prefer the 2nd take over the water being in focus.

it might be nice if they could add some more holy water to the bowl...

color is good.

Sorry I mistook your post John. A little under the weather today. I see now how my suggestions wouldn't help given the abstract nature of the competition. :)

I voted for the second one. It reminds me of the story of the crippled man waiting to get into the pool that is disturbed by an angel so he can be cured. The color is beautifully saturated in both of the photos.

Paul, I read your comment but I don't understand it... Can you elaborate a bit for me?

This may be partially due to my notebook LCD, thinking about it now, but the bottom and right seems quite dark. The reflection, along with the blue-ish highlight at the top middle, the mid blue at the top left and the highlights on the rim form a rectangular unit. I think centralising these elements in the frame (probably for me involving cropping about a (screen res) inch off the bottom and right almost to the rim), would improve it. But that's just me. :-)
