In the first 6 Challenges I entered, I received 24, 21, 20, 21, 25 and 23 comments, respectively. In the last 5 Challenges (counting Motion Blur), I've had 29, 22, 14, 14 and 10 comments. For Out of Place, I have 0 comments with 90 votes. Zero- and this will be my lowest score by far. Has anyone else noticed the comment rate dropping off lately? If so, do you suppose it's due to the generally rising number of entries?

EDIT- Wouldn't you know it... as soon as I posted this, I got a comment. LOL

I have 123 votes/1 comment in Motion Blur & 99 votes/ 0 comments in Out of Place...ummm, yeah ;) 2 of the previous 3 challenges came in at 6 comments each (some after the fact)
I have nothing past that to compare it to. I guess I came in as the drop happened, so maybe your theory is right.

For motion blur, I have 136 votes and 14 comments. The week just seems SO long when the comments come trickling in one at a time after the first 24 hours it seems.

Well now that I finished voting I am going to go back and comment on what I can. I have 90 votes and 2 comments, and for what is a terrible shot, i figured i would have gotten more criticism (i actually submitted the wrong file but once i realized it, it was too late)...i dont see comments from any of you hypocrites! nah...i shouldnt say that either...well---off to comment!

I don't often get a lot of comments. The most recent exception was this photo in the portrait challenge:

It didn't score too well but it got more attention than most because technically it was a bit controversial.
As the number of photos we have to vote on grows, it becomes increasingly difficult to comment as much as one would like. I know I rarely comment on a photo unless I have something I believe needs to be said.

Every time I look at the open challenges I see so many bad shots that I lose any will to vote or comment. Sorry if that offends anyone, but the standard, particularly in the open challenges is really going down hill fast.

Agreed. Quality and creativity both seem to be sliding, but that just makes the good ones more obvious. I still comment where I can (I give more than I receive), but haven't started voting yet.

Well, I rarely start commenting until the end, after I score, and depending on whether I have time. I've been busier lately.
And there are too many pics to meaningfully comment on each.

But, regarding your note about the score. I see there's a trend: the higher I score, the more comments I get. Should be the opposite, but in fact, at this site, most of the comments are "I like this, ..." or "I like it because."

I'm not complaining about that, just noticing. I consider all comments valuable.

But if you are looking for real feedback, besides the score (which is after valid feedback too), the real question for your statistic is: "How many constructive and analytical comments do you get". If you go back over your old photos, see what the numbers are then.

I think it also has to do with the large number of challenges lately (two of the past four months have had month-long challenges) so there's an overwhelming number of entries. Plus all the PMs people have apparently been getting about their comments are probably discouraging ....

It is simple: how many photos did you vote for? How many comments did you leave? Why one would expect to get more comments than he/she leaves? You know, there is a few people who comment my pictures - I look at their works and start recognizing them in the challenges! Of course, if I think that this one is somebody I studied - I will leave a comment. So what if my guess rate is about 50%? Any comment is a compliment - even a negative one ;-)

Dibutil- as noted, I do give out more comments than I receive, and I'm starting to guess the photographers too.

Nshapiro- Good point, but I'm not really looking for feedback- I just like hearing from the group. Most of my own comments are multi-sentence analyses (good or bad), since I find one or two word comments rather pointless, but it takes a lot longer that way.

Now I try to comment on every image I vote for. This makes it impossible for me to vote for more than around 30% in big challenges. But I think thats OK for if every voter votes for 20 or 30% of submissions we will get a statistically pretty similar result as if everyone votes for 100% of submissions as long as the votes are random.

Do you think it would be a good idea to allow anonymous commenting? That way no PM's could be made to the comment author. Simply don't show username. I think giving that option would be a good idea.
