I went from a 7 to a 4... Seriously, if you are going to give me votes under 5, at least have the common courtesy to leave a remark that I may use to help out my pics. This is out of hand, I'd like to know whats wrong with my picture now...

Patience. With so few entries I expect you'll be getting comments from those people over the next week. ^_^ At least you know some people really like it. ^_^

I generally vote the first day or two then move my votes around and comment on photos at the end of the week. |

It's just really frustrating because I recieve very high comments from everyone else, and then I get to here and WHAM I end up with some pretty rude scores.

Me too.
I think it's because people you know, know you, and either they already like your work because they know you, or won't tell you it's not that good because they don't want to hurt your feelings.
I hope that made sense.
Anyway, I started with a 3.3 with no comments. :(

movieman. I don't think that plays into the score much. No one is supposed to know who submitted what photo, so it would be hard to vote high just because you know the person. Or am I trusting the system too much? |

I think I took what he said wrong. He said "It's just really frustrating because I recieve very high comments from everyone else, and then I get to here and WHAM I end up with some pretty rude scores." and I was thinking he got the good comments from people he knew not at DPC. Whoops. |

I sometimes think I know who has posted in a challenge, but am usually wrong! Sometimes people will put similar photos in their portfolio to ones they have entered in a challenge.

Well, atleast you guys have a had a finish that wasn't sub 5!
But I'm not complaining! That is their opinion, and they are welcome
to it. I just cut off all the 3 and lowers and figure my score on that.
For example, Magazine Cover, I recieved 175 votes and anverage of 4.84.
I remove those that gave me a 1,2 or 3. That leaves me with 85% of the
original votes! The average is now 5.2483. So I have 85% of the voters
thought that it was an acceptable pic. What more can I ask for!. Ok a top ten would be nice, but oh well. As long as I can keep 75% of the voters saying that it is acceptable, I'm happy. Maybe this is a diluted way to veiw this but, it does a lot for my ego!:)

I've had 2 sub 5's. I just find it that others *non family and friends* tell me how good the work is, then I come here and it's a complete flop. I just can't fathom it.

Do you get your feedback from people all over the world before you bring it here? DPC is a global site, so peoples views/tastes are very diverse here.

I don't think you should ask anyone else.
I am challenge you, look at your shot. Is there anything you would change about it? Could you take it again and get a better shot? Is it boring? (I know this is a hard one because even though it is a technically good shot it can still be very boring)
Dpcer's want creativity, wow, and technically perfect photos to score high.
Good luck!

And, if the subject of the photo is a hot looking young girl, especially a naked one, then so much the better. ;^) |

We're all in the same boat, Jeremy. I am sure even members who have ribboned have had entries that were not to the liking of DPCers. It takes a long time to gauge what members here like. When I first joined, my first posting garnered a 6 plus and I thought, wow, this is easy. But it has been downhill ever since.
Just look at the way you vote. You've cast 329 votes with an average of 4.5866. This tells me you're somebody who has very discerning taste - just like everyone here, I presume. |

I see you posted this 1 hour after the challenge begins. I think you realize that you may have a very high score after a couple of votes, if the first few voters like it a lot, and then you will start to regress towards the average as more and more votes come in. You could start with a 10 and end up with a 4.
Now, as far as scale is concerned, you may not have been here long enough to realize that the AVERAGE score for a picture is usuall around 5 and often below. Most people on the site vote below 5 if they don't immediately see your pic as having met the challenge. Many people vote 1 if you haven't met the challenge. (If I think you haven't met the challenge but you have an excellent picture otherwise, I will tend to vote 3.) For me (anyway), an "average" picture that I wouldn't want to "keep" myself, but meets the challenge even in the slightest is a 4. If it has features that make it technically good, or aesthetically fantastic, it goes up from there all the way to 10.
I voted your Hoops image low. I think you got a number of good honest comments there. It didn't really meet the challenge in my opinion, because there's no way I could see that photo on a cover of a magazine. There's not much interesting to it, except maybe the clouds. Someone jumping and slam dunking a shot, yes, that would have worked well. Composition would have to be different as well, but I don't want to go into too much depth here.
Your other two photos are technically better. Each one seems to show improvement over the others. I didn't vote the chess one, but you did get some good advice from commenters. I do think it's hard to see the parallel lines there as a strong subject; and I also think it's hard to see the placement and the status of the board from the angle you chose.
Your third shot for silence is another notch above (a big one). I think it's very good, and I voted it in my top 20% of scores. It might have have been improved in several ways: a perspective adjustment (look at the door jam at the left side), the crop may be a bit too tight on the bottom where it might have been nice to leave more room under the light reflections on the floor. There were definitely entries which finished above you that I voted much lower, but that's how the law of averages go--there are a variety of opinions here, and a variety of experience levels, and depending on how your photo appeals to the "masses", that determines how you finish.
Hope this helps you understand. My own personal opinion is that your photography (at least as displayed here) is on a rapidly improving trend.
Regards--Neil

Is it me or does it seem like all the trolls get out of bed at the same time? In anycase I'm delighted to say this is, so far, my highest showing for almost a year. But it could be short lived if the trend continues. C'est la vie. :)
