...is to fail! (a not exact quote from Thomas Edison)
Show your failed, lowest scoring shot next to your best, highest scoring shot and explain what you are doing differently.
I have been all over the place in taking imagery. Sold my macro lens, and bought another lens set to give me a wider range of possibilities.
Macros are basically not my thing anymore.
Sports images are my niche in life, so far.

worst scoring - - - - - - highest scoring
I never received any constructive criticism as to why my worst scoring entry did so poorly, so I can only speculate. I imagine that it looked too grainy and old for the Image Grain challenge and therefore wasn't appealing.
With all of the photographers in the world shooting everything, I decided to try to always present something different than what everybody else is doing. I always keep this in mind when shooting and getting this shot of the alligator with a wide angle lens is a perfect example of doing something different.
It's obvious that I took the shot with a wide angle lens instead of a telephoto from a distance. The perspective is something that you don't see often and is what I intended before I even left the house to go get the shot. I knew exactly what I wanted.
So, that sums up what I am doing different (not compared to my worst scoring shot though) from when I first started getting serious with photography. I am trying to compose images from unique perspectives that most people don't think of or won't go through the trouble of gettng. |

I'll play!
Worst:
Probably because I ignored all those little things like composition and whatnot. :)
Best:
Because they let me do anything in photoshop I wanted! |

This is not my very lowest, as I've scored lower with gag entries and shoehorns, but this is the lowest score for a serious entry of mine, at 4.60 in the "distance" challenge:
I was trying to do something out of the box by illustrating something that was very close, but still too far to be reached. I think many people got what I was trying to convey, though several intentional characteristics of my shot got dinged, such as the motion blur on the screwdriver tip and the added grainy appearance. I was trying to achieve a grainy appearance similar to what had worked so well in this shot I saw in the "Searching" challenge
Looking back at the voting breakdown, I can see I got a lot of low scores, but also a good amount of people liked it. Not enough to pull it over a 5, however.
Highest score at 6.53 in "Beauty in the Everyday"
I know what I did right here, I am just having trouble repeating the effort. I shot in the early evening sun, the "golden hour" The light was just right to enhance all the cracked paint and rusty details on the car, as well as creating some wonderful deep shadows.

Lowest:
Well, after looking at my worst. I can't really even complain as to why it is the worst. Horrible composition, bad light, etc.
Highest:
Well, it's my strong point (architecture) so undoubtedly it would end up being my best.

Lowest scorer
I think it is technically ok. The challenge was gold and I think it was probably more yellow and one of the few portraits in the challenge. Many of the other portraits were very well done and probably suffered from being compared to the others and getting marked down. I had to use IS0 800 and didn't have much in terms of lighting. I had a worklight in the backgammon board with aluminum foil to reflect light. Now I have a couple of flashes and could make it better I think.
Highest scorer
Technically, I am not sure I could do any better for the situation and it came out exactly as planned. Much better lens too.
A note on the scores and something to think about is the size and difficulty of the challenge. My lowest scorer was in a challenge with 296 entries, and there were maybe 10-15 portraits. With so many shots you have to really standout to get the high marks and an average shot will get marked down more easily I think, especially when voted against other similar shots in a challenge(in this case portraits). My high scorer was in a very small challenge 74 entries. And I was the only one to try and replicate that shot(Deja Vu challenge) so it wasn't compared to another entry. I think this helped.I always find the easiest way to get a high score is to get a really good entry in a very small challenge. |

My highest score was in a FS that had 478 entries. (I was shocked) and my lowest had 197 entries (and I was only 10 away from the brown!! LOL)

Worst:
Best:
My worst was my fifth entry...I still had no idea what I was doing and I was trying to get arty. No clue about post processing and this shot was straight out of my camcorder.
My best was the result of timing. Right place, right time. The composition was tweaked and the hue/sat adjusted but otherwise this was straight out of the camera. I'll attribute it to shooting a lot and developing an better eye for composition. I still learned something with this entry. My horizon was a bit off. I check the horizon religiously before submitting now. |

The thread is not about measuring your highest and lowest score, that is just a reference.
The thread is geared twords how have you adjusted from your lowest to get to your highest score.
The scores are the "comic relief" to the adjustment, and abilities of the "straight man".

Hmm, it looks like my entry for the success challenge may be my biggest failure yet!
