No I never do vote down something that does not meet the challenge. This is how I score regardless:
1- meets challenge
1- in focus
1- good tones and colours
1- interesting subject
1- details are good, i.e. dof, sharpness, clean where it is meant to be
those are the basic 1 through 5 points, the rest is on how much it affects me and is voted accordingly
I am pretty fair when it comes to voting and do not vote down just becuase it does not meet the challenge, or what I think may be illegal, becuase I am no expert adn I figure that if I think something is off, then someone else probably thinks that too and it will get the SC attention.
And edited to add: I had a shot that looked like it was totally illegal under Basic Rules, but it got puled and the SC looked it over and validated it. So that confirms to me that I should Never Pressume something.

Thanks for the clarification. But, my specific statement was on those images that are believed to be 'illegal' - not following the rules set - rather than DNMC. A voter voting an image down because they think it is illegal to the rule set is not following the rules of voting
(I am not suggesting you do such a thing Juliet, but it was based on a couple of comments in the thread that you were discussing).

No I agree with you Bassbone,
It may well be illegal, but I am no expert in PhotoShop, so for all I know, it could well be legal. I vote for the shot, not on whether I think it is legal or not.
I dont think that it fair on people when someone does that, it is a shame as they may have come up with a way to do a shot in a different way and it is legal. But people assume that they know better adn take it upon themselves to vote it down.
I say, vote on what is in front of you. |

Sounds like a great standard to follow in voting as it is fair and hits all the points a photo should have...as well as how it affects the viewer! |

While HDR and Tone Mapping are illegal in basic, Photoshop CS2-3 shadow/highlight adjustment IS legal, and that is PS's version of tone mapping. Plus working with ACR (PS RAW converter) allows a LOT of tonal manipulation in a basic-legal package. So it is definitely possible to produce images that have that exaggerated "HDR" look in basic.
It's IMO the greatest current inconsistency in the rules...

Well, you would hope that most people would follow some kind of personal rules and not just throw out 1's and 2's to lower the scores of everyone else.
But we all know that that is not the case, but in my mind, at least I know that I tried my best to see the photo as the person took it and what they had in mind. So I rarely feel bad about a score I give.
Apart from once, when I didnt know that you hit 0 for 10 and i was typing in 10 and gave them a 1, but I emailed her and told her what I had done.

In reference to a comment I received overnight saying my picture was not Sepia enough...
from Websters Dictionary:
Sepia:
1 a brown melanin-containing pigment from the ink of cuttlefishes b: the inky secretion of a cuttlefish
2: a print or photograph of a brown color resembling sepia
3: a brownish-gray to dark olive-brown color
olive brown - a shade of brown tinged with green
There is nothing in the description saying we had to recreate an old photograph. we gotta tough crowd here on this challenge...lol |

If you suspect it being illegal, vote as if it was done legit and then submit a request for validation. If it is a great shot but you don't think it meets the rules, give it a great score and then let SC take care of it.

There are full blown colours, black and whites with not a hint of any type of brown colour. several that to my eye look illegal in basic, and some that people are not even making any effort at all.
there are some that are amazing too.
we will see what the second half voting looks like |

Not that your comment was focused at me, but just wanted to make it clear that I never said anything about my voting. i understand the rules of voting every image as if it were legal. I was actually implying that those who had color in their photo or not following the rules were the ones voting everyone else's photos lower....and even that was a joke. As for voting images that i see as DNMC.....I do vote them lower, but always try to leave a comment as to why i think it is DNMC....I hate those who just comment DNMC!!!!

Huh? Most of the time, what's to say? DNMC is DNMC. Does it really add anything to say "A butterfly isn't a bird. This is a bird challenge. DNMC"?

I disagree with that Bear. I had a shot with 6 bottles in it for the even challenge and I had a comment that it didnt fit the challenge.
I think if you give a DNMC, and eplaining WHY in your eyes it does not, is pretty cool and helpful
LOL,unless it is a Butterfly in the Bird Challenge

That's an obvious example, at least to me. Using the current challenge as example, if somebody gave me a DNMC comment along the lines of, "I find your picture to be a bit too red to be considered sepia", I would find that helpful.
To stay on topic, I'm sitting at a wonderful 4.9444. |

Well....there are alot of amatuers on this site and alot of people may not always know the definition of a challenge...many times the description doesn't do it much justice....there can also be a language disconnect.
ex...in a still life challenge, someone takes a picture of a butterfly sitting on a tree....the butterfly is still...it's life...still life right? Not quite...if you tell that person what still life is then next time they will enter a better photo.
ex...at one point we had the stationary and the stationery challenges back to back. Some people didn't know the difference because of the langauge disconnect. Tell them why their stationary entry should have been in the other category helps them the next time.
lastly...if a challenge just says portraits....and someone enters a landscape photo (in portrait orientation!) don't they deserve to know why you voted their portrait DNMC??

I dont think something should be penalized for a given tone of sepia. Unless its obvious that the shot is black and white or color.

I'd like to jump with you...I was at a 4.5 and have fallen to a 4.1 - I can't afford to get any lower! ;)
Anybody know what's the lowest average one has finished with in a competition? |

From Wiki
Sepia tone refers to the coloring of a black and white photographic print that has been toned with a sepia toner to simulate the faded brownish color of some early photographs. This process can be simulated using a computer and digital photo-editing software. |
