I just joined a local photography club and they are having a challenge titled "Decisive Moments", it needs to be a nature shot and is open to any nature and wildlife subjects. The winners will get there shots exhibited at our local Wildlife Exhibit lobby so it's a great time to come up with a winning shot... Any ideas would be helpful.

I agree, I would love to catch something like that. I also thought about birds landing on a lake but this time of year they are pretty sparse around here.

Lightning comes to mind, as does an image of a large wave breaking dramatically. For the non-wildlife approach, of course.

Thanks, I will keep the lightning in mind just in case we get some, waves would be nice but no breaking water around here.

anything to do with birth? Or a butterfly escaping its cocoon? A mother bird feeding its young might work too but you'd need a long lens.

Would 'human nature' cut it, or is that a bit too left field? When I think of that I picture a homeless guy asking for change on the street holding a sign asking for help and loads of guys in suits passing him by. Maybe on 1/5 shutter speed so the suits are all blurry? Or pictures of war would be ideal for the brief.

Or, some kind of shot of someone standing up for their beliefs in the face of adversity... a protest perhaps?

How wide is the scope on this or is it only 'nature' as in trees and that kind of stuff?

The birth idea is great, I thought of a bird hatching but again it is hard to find this time of year. As far a any people or structures they would normally not be allowed, they prefer un touched nature type shots.

What about an area flooded by the construction of a dam? A tree sticking out of a huge lake? Or a fault line for earthquakes, you know where half the road is 18" below the other half?

There's a fox that rummages through the bins round here I've been trying to capture a shot of that for ages.

I think anything like that, a bear or something rioting through your trash, would be a good shot. You can sell the angle that the destruction of natural environments is a very decisive moment in nature. Then to claw back the rose tinted nature loves vote sell the angle that natures adaptation to our urban development is a testament to its strength.

For a pure untouched nature shot this is a bad time of year for decisive moments. I suppose you could wake something that was hibernating up....I wouldn't advise it though.

Neat ideas, the earthquake idea would have worked when I lived in California, fortunatly for us Colorado does not move that often!

Ya, nature interacting with with human stuff could be good, anyone know how to wake up a bear without making him mad?

Maybe something odd in nature, like a tree growing on the face of a stone cliff. I recently saw a whole bunch of trees growing on top of an abandoned building in China. Show where nature is reclaiming something from man for a change. Just a thought.

Good ideas, I especially like the nature reclaiming idea.
