Headin' back to the home front (victoria BC) for a couple of weeks for family health situation and other miscellaneous and long-overdue stuff.

I've never had the camera back to Canada and would like to make the best of it.

I'd like to pack light since I've got a pretty hefty box coming back with me, so I'm thinking of taking just the 30D, Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 and a polarizer and maybe some grad filters. (and my portable HD for backups)

Anyone feel like making some suggestions? This may turn out to be the last time I ever see either of my grandparents as both are in precarious health. For this reason I was thinking of doing the 50mm 1.4... not sure.

I leave tomorrow evening.

Weather is likely going to be light snow, or not, with lovely misty mornings and stunning sunrises (with deer in the backyard).

My mother has an FZ-20 which I am hoping to use as well if I need a bit more reach.

My first inclination was to say "you'll be fine with just the Tamron," but I can never seem to go anywhere without ALL of my gear.
I get the feeling that you'll kick yourself for not packing the 50mm... especially if this may be the last chance for some fond family memories.

The 50/1.4 will add a mere 290g to your pretty hefty box. Why hesitate?

i've done trips before with just the 17-50, but sometimes wish I had my prime with me, or a little bit extra reach. If only you had the 85mm...

I'd take the tammy as well as the 50mm because it's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. And it would work great for the candid street shots too with the DOF and fast focussing.

Thanks. I think you guys are right. I won't be in the city much at all I don't think, but I think I'll take that 50. The 85mm would give a bit extra reach, but I suspect that I will only need that in the morning and I will get that ready by grabbing Mum's cam which is an ultra-zoom with a constant f/2.8, so I think I'll be OK.

mark, the hefty box is on the way back, but I think you might be right... why hesitate.

cheers all.

One camera and one lens. Bring a bunch of cards and maybe something to dump the images to.

You might want to also bring a flash. That's it.

It sounds like you have a lot to do back home, don't stress yourself with extra junk you're not going to use.

Haha you think you'll see the sun this time of year??

Be ready for rain, slush, rain, fog, cloud, wind, and rain.

Anyways, when I travel light, its body (no grip) normal zoom, 50 1.4, and a flash.

light for me is one body and an 85mm 1.8. No flash. No zooms.
I might throw a 17-40 in the mix if I want to do some landscapes.

Make sure you take those pictures of your family while you can. Those memories are more important than landscapes.

Shoot what matters.

Thanks guys, I just arrived.

Oddly enough, all that snow that I kept hearing about kinda melted away while I was en route. Weather was S T U N N I N G. Gorgeous and FLIPPING COLD on the ferry. I actually used my polarizer, ND Grad 4 and 17-50, although not for many shots since many of the spots I wanted to shoot were very windy.

Will be using the 50mm pretty quick too.

I could have brought my flashes, but I was nervous about getting hassled at customs. I needn't have worried, but I also don't think I will regret it.

Cheers and thanks for the advice.
