FINALLY my copy of my book arrived. I gotta say that blurb.com does an excellent job. Really nice quality, pics look great (other than I've seen them all entirely too often by now!), and the folks at work are very impressed! I highly recommend everyone make themselves a book. That way when your scores aren't quite where you'd like them to be at DPC, you can take out your book and say "See? I made this!" Nice sense of accomplishment! |

Fantiastic Job Melethia! Impressive work in the first 15 pages!
I bet its quite a feeling when you pass your copy to someone to look at.
I never did get around to doing mine. Maybe next year.

Finished my book for this year. There's still time (just) if you wanted to start now and finish by the end of the month.
Go on - make a book!

I wasn't sure when I first saw this thread that I'd be able to do it so I didn't sign up, but I took a bunch of pictures starting May 19 which I think would work -- is it not OK to complete the project within a 30-day time span, as opposed to a specific calendar month?
Also, I'm using my own layout software -- planning to submit a finished PDF. Is that right?

31 day period, but there's a 'fuzzy month' concept, so you can start any time in May and finish 31 days later. So yes, you could do that. The goal is to create a 35+ photo PDF within that time period. Shoot, edit and create the book, all in 31 days.

OK -- I'm over halfway there now. I have (so far) one case where I want to create a two-page spread -- can I just print those pages separately from the rest of the book so they'll always display together? |

It's your PDF, you can assemble it any way you like. You could have different sized pages. Some people have assembled it as one continuous sheet. It's a digital book. Plenty of possibilities. |

I find doing the layout/ sequencing interesting, picking pictures that work well together on facing pages and still having some flow and order. |

OK, I've posted my book at the SoFoBoMo site ...
I figure about:
Shooting - 3 days/sessions
Major editing - 3 days/sessions
Design/Layout - 2 days/sessions
Major Redesign/edit - 1 day/session
Screwing around Final tweaks/edits - 1 days/session
I still have 2-3 days before my final deadline if anyone has suggestions for major changes. :-) |

Thanks -- I was amazed to see there are already over 110 completed books posted. It's going to take some time to download and view them all!
It would be interesting to publish it as a cooperative venture on CD/DVD, with everyone getting equal shares ... ;-) |

That, or release a bittorrent of them all. Interesting ideas. I'm amazed how successful it's been this year. |

I'm a Mac Luddite -- I don't know how to use that stuff. Besides, it'd be nice to make some money from photography somehow -- my income has dropped significantly of late ... :-( |

Gordon, Paul and Louisa great work guys. You all captured a your subjects beautifully and put together lovely books that tell your stories. Louisa I do have one question: Did you eat any of those LIVE scorpions.
I've just posted up my book on sofobomo too, can see Issuu version here so you don't need to download a PDF!

I can help you with that -- what software program(s) are you using and at what stage are you having a problem?
I have access to almost all versions of Acrobat, Distiller, etc. |

And here is my sofobomo '09 contribution.
Madrid - A Melbournian's Perspective
Now that the trip and the book are behind me, I can once again throw myself into DPC. |

thanks, paul! i'm using indesign, and gordon pointed me at the compression options. i *think* i've exhausted all of those, trying every conceivable combination, but still wind up not getting it smaller than 16.3mb. the book is 48 pages with about 60 images, all 200dpi, most between 10x6 and 10x8. they're all bw. i used the [smallest size] option, as well as checked off 'optimize for web viewing' and still no go. (on the other hand, the printable version is 80+mb.)
if you can help me, awesome! otherwise, i'll trim a couple pages just to be able to upload it to the sofobomo site. |
