I've also recently heard about Scribus which seems to be a free, cross platform desktop publishing package which you could use to assemble the final book. Don't know much more about it though.

It's almost a "one click" thing with .Mac account and iPhoto in iLife 08. Select the images, select "book", select the formats/templates, and fill in the text.
Publishing images on line is similar. In iPhoto 08 highlight the ones you want on line, click "new file", add description or comments with all at once, or with each image, click "publish"... Done. When you edit the images in that file, it changes them on line too.
A book does have a certain tactile magic connection that images on line cannot match.

I think that this is a grand idea that I have not tried before. I want to be there for this adventure.

It's true. I got a trial printed up a few weeks ago. Very different to a slideshow or even a set of prints.

I have a half started idea for a book, I would like to put my name in the hat for giving this a go.

Good luck! All you have to do is do it.

a bump as there is less than a week to the start date for SoFoBoMo. A chance to get in at the beginning.

More info here and here.

unofficial fuzzy start date is tomorrow. Still time to think about getting involved.

I've started with mine, just need a variety of photos, more than what I have now.

Alright! I've started. I'm working on 5 shots this week. Since I'm heading to the Utah Red Rock country in mid-month, I'm sure alot of shots will come from that trip. However, I want a variety, so many others will be included.

So Gordon, when you get up... :-)

I was looking at the blurb.com site - they have software to download to "build" your book which I may try just to see the various layout options. I may end up using it. I think I want my first attempt to be relatively simple (and I don't have much of an artistic eye for layout anymore, though once upon a time I did lay out a book - high school yearbook). But I do have a couple of questions (and I will go back through your blog later this weekend)...

Size - I'm assuming 300 dpi at whatever size you plan the picture to be on the page?
Cross pages - I'm assuming it is NOT a good idea to have a picture cross a page due to losing the part that goes across the middle. Yes?
Profile - I remember reading about the profiles - best to just leave everything in AdobeRGB to start? Or is there a better "base" profile?

And yes, I realize the objective is to shoot and publish in a month, but I want to do something with stuff on the drive (my trip to the sandbox) and this will at least get me started.

this link has info on blurb and colour management Even if you don't use that profile, you want to end up in sRGB before pulling the images in to booksmart - as that's what it expects to be getting and will ignore the embedded profile.

300dpi is the way to go.

This blog post explains how to put a full bleed image across the gutter

The annoying thing is that you can't use booksmart to produce a PDF of the book.

What would be the advantage of producing a PDF? Portability?

Depends if you want to be able to share the results on-line or not. PDF is one of the easiest ways to do that.

It is about half way through the 'fuzzy month' that is Solo Photography Book Month. There is still time to get involved and make a book in a month, starting May 1st and ending May 31st. It was a great learning experience for me, doing a book in the last 4 weeks.

Here's a link to my finished SoFoBoMo book, Photo Expressions

A lot of other people are finishing up their first ever book now, too. There is plenty of inspiration out there. Most importantly, there is still time to get involved and do your own!

Shoot it, edit it, write it design it, lay it out and put it all together in one month.

Nice job on your first book. Were the models people you know or are they professional models? They all show their true faces to me, I didn't see one forced smile or anything close to posed actually. Technically they are flawless. Very good work, inspiring.

Congratulations Gordon.

There is one professional model in the book that I worked with for about 30 seconds. Most of the people I don't even know.
There are a few friends, a few new acquaintances. Mostly just people I approached on the street or I found in the 3 week
period I was shooting.

Awesome Gordon, I'm busy finishing up my book, still need a few photos though.... cutting it too close and will probably go over the deadline a bit...

Well, just about done with my book. Will be ordering from Blurb. They seem pretty decent.

Just to tweak a few things here and there in the book, and toying with the ID to add a few pages of black & white photos.....

OK, so I'm a little late on the assignment, but after a LOT of work (and I learned a lot, and will do somethings quite differently if there's a next time), I finally got my book submitted to blurb.com and am waiting for the hardcopy to arrive so I can make sure I didn't make any horribly glaring errors. Then I'll order copies for the family. A quick thanks to Gordon for the idea and the impetus, even if it did take me awhile!

Book is here.

Wow Deb, I thoroughly enjoyed your book, both the photos and the words. What a wonderful treasure for your family.

Thanks - I wish they let you see the whole thing online, but it's just a 15 page or so preview, isn't it? To be honest, I checked the preview when I first loaded it but haven't looked from anything other than "my" account.

Yes, just the first 15 pages plus front and back covers. I liked seeing more of your sandbox work that you had not shared with us previously. Some really nice stuff in there.

Deb, that is wonderful. What a nice way to document your adventure in the desert.

Deb, the book looks amazing. Fantastic job on it.
