removable hard drive for a solid state laptop. Easily stored back-up storage, less fragile than a magnetic hard disk.
I'll take a couple of the price is right. |

Pretty small compared to those coming out of cameras like the 1Ds and no doubt smaller still than the next round of sensors. |

How big's your hard drive ? :) When did you last back it all up... (in the collective 'you' sense) |

| Heh, those are some fast cards if they live up to their speeds... 50MB/s. But transferring 48GB at 50MB/s still means over 16 minutes to transfer! |

You gotta remember, CF cards ain't just for cameras. Think of it as portable storage. I use a CF card to transfer files for work, for instance. They take forever to transfer online.

Interesting historical data from dpreview:
From 2002:
"Pretec recently announced 1.5, 2.0 and 3.0 GB Type II CF cards...At this stage we do not have pricing for these cards, sufficient to say that they're likely to be fairly pricey."
From 2008:
"Pretec, which has quite a history of pushing forward flash media capacities, has announced new CompactFlash cards available in sizes up to 48 GB...Release dates and pricing are yet to be announced but don't expect the largest cards to be cheap..."
Nothing ever changes except our appetites for storage. :-) |

800gig in 3 drives active swapped weekly to 500x2 gig usb drives
1 500gig off site
eyeing terabyte drives now..
providing you have a good cf card there is no need to worry about it's longevity
ive been using 8 gig cards for +1 year & have had no issues
(did have issues with a 48meg card & a 2gig card in the past .. )
and as other have mentioed other uses than cameras .. thnk of mp4 video direct to card
-that would hold hours, if not days of video..
