I know this is a lead balloon, but I'm gonna throw it up there anyway... What about having two exclusive (you can only enter one) "Best of 2007" challenges? One for landscapes/seascapes, nature, insects, flowers, wildlife; the other for people, portraits, weddings, candids, kids, pets, cities, architecture, street photography. You'd still have as many entries, but voting might not seem as overwhelming if you had to vote two large challenges rather than one gigantic one. (And I have no dog in the fight - the shot I would have entered resides on my hard drive at home.)

bump.

I think that idea's a good one, especially your suggestion for breaking it down into more managable chunks. I've a shot in mind that I took early in the year, before I came on to DPC, and I'm dying to find out what score it would have got.

Works for my attention span.

It's been suggested before, and I've always thought it is an excellent idea. I wish they'd do it.

I think it's a great idea. I hate voting on 600+ entries.

Agreed.

The other potential benefit is it allows photographers who have a strong preference one way or the other to vote shots that may appeal to them more - landscape guys can vote the "nature" side, people shooters can vote the "people" side.

I don't like the idea - it would move away from the idea of a Free Study. We'd get some people basing their vote on how well the picture fits the category much like in the themed challenges.

I agree. And for me, I would rather compete against 600+ images.

Is there any other way to split it up? Like January to June and July to December or something?

Sounds like a great idea to me!

Sure. Or even/odd member numbers, LOL... But it's always been kinda hard to vote on the comparative merits of a great portrait vs a great landscape, whatever, and some of us think ALL the Free Studies would benefit from being double-exclusive along the lines suggested here. Lawd knows they get enough entries... I've always thought it makes little sense to award only 3 ribbons in a 500+ entry challenge when the same 3 ribbons go to a 96-entry challenge...

Spot on.

Then again it wouldn't be a free study if they were divided into categories, it would be like the monthly portrait and landscape challenges... just my 2 cents

Anything that frees you from having to compete against landscapes I'm all for!

Now what's wrong with a landscape or two? ;-)

I like the idea.. the fewer number of entries the better but the division may not be quite that simple.. We may be left with pictures falling in both categories and people running around giving dnmcs..

I've seen a couple of posts that refer to the monthly free studies.

Just to clarify, this is just talking about splitting up the Best of 2007, NOT the monthly free studies.

FWIW
Best of 2004 = 530 entries
Best of 2005 = 829 entries
Best of 2006 = 705 entries

We could call the split challenge 'Half of the best of 2007', or 'Part of the best of 2007' .... how does that sound?

Yes, I understand that and I'm all for it. I also think, personally, it would be a good idea for the monthlies, but DEFINITELY for the HUGE best-of-year challenge. I think it's fairly dismaying that a relatively average image with, say, a 6.6 score can cop a blue ribbon in an "unpopular", 90-entry challenge, while a truly fantastic image with a 7.1 score can't even crack the top 10 in the year-end free study.

I realize that this is just "the way things are", we have big challenges and little challenges, but the best-of-year is HUGE and could benefit from sub-division. You could always award an uber-ribbon to the highest score in both challenges, that would be sweet :-)

or an alternative idea, for one challenge only extend the voting to two weeks or a month so people have plenty of time to get their 20% in

Well I would be willing but only if the most cliché of clichés is banned at least. That is you can't have rocks in the foreground, a body of water in the middle and a sunset/sunrise in the background. If you order it differently or shoot something else you're fine. Hows that? :P
