I̢۪m now waiting to see what gets DQ̢۪d. Based on the photos the variations seem to run the full spectrum. I know mine won̢۪t do well but I̢۪m fairly new here and still learning the ropes. The only thing that will bother me is if none of the photos get DQ̢۪d. I say that only because I had other ideas for a much better shot that based on my reading would have been DQ̢۪d for sure. I̢۪ll just wait to see. Good luck to everyone who entered this challenge. You won̢۪t have any problem beating me. As of this morning I only had 55 votes with a Avg. 5.109. Not good for me. Oh well maybe next time.

I hear you on that...but that's the bone of contention at the moment and as far as I can work out, up to the SC to decide. At the end of the day it's a new and almost trial challenge so I think it's a learning/evolution process for everyone. I'd hate to lose out to photos that should have been DQd though because it seems unfair to those of us who tried to stay legal and didn't hope for leniency. Gonna keep holding my breath ;)

Ok so mine is bombing. And again it is through expectations of what the challenge title tells you to expect (otherwise known as "DNMC"). Ah well - it was a toss-up between doing that and spending 2 hours in the freezing cold taking a sunrise HDTR at 6am...
Fortune did not favour the brave this time ;) Or i suppose it would have if i had braved the cold... hrm - something to ponder.

At least one HDTR isn't doing so great, with at least one commenter not even seeing the time lapse.

Always. :) Didn't learn my lesson from this shot:

That's a great shot and you're good a subtle even if the voters aren't, keep doing it.

how about a pool on the number of DQs? give it a month for the results to shake out.

I went through the entries. I'm not voting this one because I'm not sure how to vote it. But I'm very, very intimidated. Ain't no freakin' way I could edit 90% of those. Is there any thought to a DPCJr site for the editing-challenged? :(

It's not that hard! I was stunned how easy it is, actually. Just layer 'em up, turn off all but the layer you're working on, and erase (or mask) away. This was my first attempt at it, and I shot the 3 originals hand-held no less, so I had to align the 3 images first, and even THAT was easy...

LOL. I used a new masking technique not covered explicitly in my tutorial (and your comment says you liked it, Bobbie).

Hey Bear, I'm coming to appreciate your heavier-duty tripod. Mine moved a bit between shots, so I had to do a bit of re-alignment even though it wasn't handheld!

It's not easy. And I have tried. I can't mask or mouse or something. I'm looking at some of these entries and I can't tell where they edited at all (which is a good thing!) But when I try it? Mud. And mud isn't pretty when lovely young ladies aren't involved.

It helps a LOT to invest in a Wacom pen tablet...

I have one. I'm not very capable with it. I suppose I need to practice with it more. But in the mean time, I shall stick with basic editing, thanks. :)

Yep! But my masking on this entry was accomplished completely with the mouse.

Deb, you just gotta use small, soft brushes. In most cases, the background's static, so you're not talking about pixel-level masking except for where copies of the subject hit each other. It's okay to include a little background around each image. For example, this mask:

I'll practice. There are shots in this challenge, though, where the masking had to be infinitely and incredibly detailed to get the results. Pretty darned amazing if you ask me.

I got one for Christmas but I feel like a 4 yr old learning to write. Or better yet, I feel like my mother when she tries using a mouse.

I think someone early in this or the other thread about the new rules and this challenge mentioned that this was gonna be a train wreck.

Well I agree and a LOT of the entries were worse than I dare submit after reading these threads about what was or was not acceptible.

I decided NOT to enter as I had once experienced a DQ and did not want to sit on ants for my next 24 entries. I have NO idea whether the Council will actually choose to DQ the more than 20 persons that submitted entries even MORE DQable than mine would have been but chose not to dare them.

For the person that said there would only be 3 to 4 entries ... I stand on my opinion that there were 86 entries in the HDR challenge that took more software and expertise than this did IMO. I suggested that he was underestimating the determination of the photographers here and was glad to see (I think) 89 entries ... well at LEAST a BOATLOAD more than 3 or 4.

It is a pleasure to have just renewed my subscription here. What a wonderful group of experimental people.

this was funny for me to read .. I CANT USE A MOUSE !!!!
well i can but i find them awkward and difficult to use .. i was using the aiptek digitizer drawing tablet with pen mouse until a couple of months ago when i got the wacom .. wacom is so much better but more expensive ..
i really dont know how anyone can process a photograph with a mouse, especially when doing selective anything .. i think of it as my paint brush .. if you start to use one then you wont believe how you ever did without it ..

i dont even have a regular mouse connected to my computer .. its great .. other family members, like teenagers, dont use my computer because they find the pen awkward to use .. !! ..

Just keep practicing; you'll get to Carnegie Hall soon :-)

I do practically everything on the computer with my mouse; all I use it for is Photoshop tasks that involve "drawing" in one way or another. So that's making selection with the freehand lasso tool, using the brushes to dodge and burn, the clone tool, stuff like that. I find the pen toll wildly awkward to use for everything else. I use the Wacom mouse right on the drawing pad, and pull the pen out as needed.

Well, while the rest of you are blabbering and theorizing I decided to do something constructive. I'm writing the philosophical debate for each photo in order to jumpstart the SC. Apparently I've started a little late because quite a few DQs are already pouring in, but at least I'm doing my bit.
