Just had a look at the thread about whether a DPC revolution is about to start. Anyway, so...
Online communities establish. They grow. They establish norms, social rules, communication guidelines. Every once in a while those norms are overthrown. And the people form social groupings, those sub-communities form their own norms, there are arguments and conflicts of values between members. Misbehaviour results in social exclusion, whereas good behaviour results in praise, and personalities and relationships are communicated across.
The interesting thing about this, for any ambitious budding sociologists, is that online communities form perfect little miniature models of real societies, and all the social dynamics you get in cities and countries also play themselves out in full view in cyberspace.
A mistaken criticism people make is that "you're wasting your time on something that isn't real". Cyberspace is very real though. Real people, real communication, real dynamics. It has limitations, for sure, but it's not open to being shrugged away that easily. It provides real contact, and frequently, real support.
Anyway, some questions:
- What are the limitations of cyberspace compared to society? What are the limitations of society compared to cyberspace?
- What is the effect of the existence of cyberspace? How is it changing the world? Is it altering society in any way? How about human relations? Support networks?
- What is the positive impact? What is the negative impact?
Haven't a clue about the answers. It's a sociology study waiting to happen though :)
Anyway, just thought I'd share the questions... |
Interesting post! Sounds like you might be interested in this article: A Group Is It's Own Worst Enemy which talks about social software and group behavior on the Internet. Based on the questions you asked, it sounds like you'd be most interested in the section Four Things to Design For (#4) on how scale kills conversations which is at the end of the article, after the discussion of how social software is changing the world and describes how Usenet died (positive/negative impact). PM me if you'd like to discuss in detail! :) |

Woooooooooooooooooooohoooooooooooooo. |
I was wondering where those 7.2 pounds came from... |

Hi all
First of all, please accept my apologies for ranting yesterday over a score, of all things. Everyone here already knows what I mean anyway!
Don, glad you're back, though I also know of a nice barn or two just in case we need it...
Congrats jerseygenie on your weight loss! A pound per day, that's pretty damn good! Keep it up!
Deb, I'm now online from home with JunoTurbo, $9.95 Cdn per month for accelerated dial-up. Works so far, now I can stop in and annoy and whine at will ;-)
OK now the universe is back as it should be, sun's come out and I've nothing to do for a couple hours til water softener guy shows up. May as well go shoot some birdies. |

I have been absent from this thread, and almost absent from the site, for a few days now. The last I was looking, Fearless Leader Don was announcing his imminent departure. I gather that's been reversed, to which I say "Oh, thank goodness! Maybe the nose/face comment helped?"
Other than that, what have I missed? Anyone want to give me a synopsis of the highlights?
On a more nominal "annals of suckage" note, some of you may be aware that I have long bemoaned the absence of a brown ribbon in my portfolio. Just a few minutes ago, while seeking my "most 1's received" candidate, I realized I actually DID get a brown ribbon for my "self-portrait-as-raindrop". I started a thread about it here.
I'm so happy! Don's gonna stay, and I have a Brown. I could just cry :-) Something I can share with Melethia, it makes us feel SO much closer in my heart...

I'm glad Don's staying but I've yet to achieve the illustrious Brown. Oh, and Barbara, I shall look up your little town and head over there one of these days to take some pictures for you. I have some down time coming. :-)

Yeah, I just realized that, snif.... I had "remembered" seeing one in your profile page, but it was just some sort of "fake" brown ribbon... What's with that, anyway?
And does anyone have a link to a brown ribbon GIF I can put on my own profile page?

Speaking of gifs for our profile pages, I won a posthumous red ribbon at one time and never figured out how to post it. Someone help please? |

It's a ribbon for No Comments Received During a Challenge. It's another admirable goal. Achieved only by the TRULY mediocre shots. And Raish has some beautiful brown ribbon gifs. He may let you use one if you ask nicely. |

speaking of no comments received, I personally want to thank Melethia for giving me my first (and currently only) comment on my Best of entry - was beginning to think I would go the whole week without feedback. So thank you, Deb! |

Here is the wikipedia article about Buedengen (many spellings of the town name). I would be grateful for photos and you are sure to have a wonderful time. Now I can actually be jealous of where you are.

You're welcome, Karen. I've made it through 25% of the entries and commented on about half of those or so. I was going to try to comment on all entries, but now my goal is to just get to vote all the entries. Seems I'll have to come in to work to do it, though. The adventures of obtaining home internet service in Germany just get more fun all the time! (Not.)
Thanks for the link, Barbara - I may head out there on Saturday. Keep in mind this time of year the light is quite gray and exists for a limited time. I'd forgotten how early it gets dark, and how late it gets light this time of year here. But summer makes up for it!! |

eta btw dla (doncha love acronyms): You post challenge addendum in the photographer's comments of the nearly-but-not-quite-laureate image in question are TS manifesto stuff...

I know I'm jumping into this a little late, but getting a Posthumous ribbon in a free study was one of my proudest achievements! You mustn't take that away from others, Don. Or at least please consider it very carefully. Besides, this place would have a gaping hole without your sardonic wit and poetry. |
