Well my wife loves this site so i figured this would be the best place to ask. (Hope she won't see this section) Her work is really taking of lately and she is getting close to need a studio set up and or more on site equipment. Right now she has some odds and ends. I'm wanting to set her up with a well rounded equipment regiment. So here is where me stupidity kicks in. Where to start. It maybe alot to ask but i'd like to hear the opinions of the pros. A shopping list if you will. Start with what you would buy in the priority you'd get them so that way i don't jump ahead of myself i'd appreciate it. Also this way i won't wast money and buy the wrong thing. Looking forward to ya'lls feed back. Thanks ahead of time.

P.S.
Her profile is bowronfam3 if you want to see a bit of here stuff. She has a Canon EOS-350D Rebel XT with the standard lens that comes with it.

Good man, I'm only a semi-pro so I won't confuse you with what I think but I surely admire you for doing this for your good wife.

Very cool how you are helping out your wife.

Do you know if she already has any specific studio equipment? (i.e. backdrop, lights, etc..)

All the best,

Hard to tell where to start but how about:

- A good tripod & head - useful for a lot of things.
- If into portraits then a faster lens (the f number gets smaller for faster - go figure). Primes (lens that only have a single number and don't zoom) are usually faster for the price but zooms more flexible. Try a Canon 50mm f1.8 or f1.4 or zoom, a Tamron 28-75 f2.8.
- Maybe a basic lighting setup... Check some sets at alienbee's.
- If into landscapes, something wide (smaller number on the mm end).

You are probably better talking to her :-)

For studio equipment, here's a list with my suggestions:

-Strobe Lights, reflectors, backdrops. I think two strobe lights would be a great start, along with reflectors (i.e. umbrellas).
-Canon's EF 50mm f/1.8 II is a good lens for portraiture and what not.
-Light meter! I use and recommend the Minolta Light Meter. It's a great piece of equipment. Give it the asa (iso) you are shooting with, and a set shutter speed, and it will measure the light giving you the correct aperature to use with Manual Settings mode (Tv for Canon i think)
-Perhaps a Soft Filter to use over her lens. Soft filters are pretty nice for portraits, giving a soft feel to the skin; hence the name...

All the best,
-AC

It might help if you gave us a budget to work within. There are just so many things, and a budget would help us narrow the focus (pun intended).

Oh... and (since she is not already one) the single biggest thing you could buy her to help improve her photography is a membership to DPC.

How about a DPC membership as a stocking stuffer?

I've been thinking of getting into the studio stuff lately, but i have decided to go with the flash setup so that it can be portable and used outside also seeing I am not a pro.

I don't know what camera she has but I'm going for a 580ex, 430ex (as I already have the 430ex) a couple of light stands and the adapter for the flashes. An umbrella and bounce reflectors to help in that area. Also going for the ST-E2 as the master. Also need the backdrop stands and material.

These are the things that I want for the future. Maybe they are what you are after also.
