I am having a problem with my X-drive. It tells me it's full when it has 17 gig of space left on it.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? If so, how did you fix it?

Any help is appreciated.

Shari

Ours only has a 5 Gig disk in it (that we had lying spare when we bought the thing) but we've never had that kind of problem with it.

We just, less than an hour ago, ordered a new 40 Gig drive for it.

The only problem we've ever had with ours, an early model, is if we try and delete images from the card on the camera before downloading to the X drive - older versions of its onboard software didn't cope with fragmented CF cards.

There's an idea....
How often have you used/filled it? Then deleted files?
Maybe you need to defrag?

does it use a FAT or NTFS file system?

Not familiar with x-drive, but deleted files do take space on normal drives. If you use Norton Protected Recycle bin, you need to empty it once and a while. Or just try emptying your recycle bin.

my x-drive never worked. I have sent it back to be fixed twice already. That's all I can tell you. Good luck!

Jason
Bad luck!
We've used ours on a lot of occasions - sometimes filling it with a week or more's worth of images...

I have an 20GB x-drive and have not experienced this problem.

However, I dropped it once and had to put in a new harddisk, reformatted and was ready to go. If you can get the images from the X-drive to the PC, you might try a format. Might solve the problem.

oh i see it, in REALLY tiny print it says to install your own HD. Can you use any HD or does it have to be a notebook HD? What file system does it need? NTFS? FAT? Does memory stick differ in file systems?

It has to be a notebook HD, otherwise it just does not fit in the box.

Since you will be formatting the disk with the X-drive connected to the PC, some operating systems will pose a maximum limit on the size of the harddisk. I use a 20GB harddisk and Windows 98, works fine.

www.powerinnumbers.co.au is a great supplier, and has some technical info on the site.

The storage forum on dpreview is also a good source of info.

My XDrive II came with the 20GB harddrive. But there are instructions on how to install your own larger/smaller/new one.

Have you figured out the problem/solution yet?

Setz and I worked on it the other night. I deleted everything off the disk and it seems to be working again. Of course, I haven't had a chance to try transfering a full 256mb card yet (which is what I was doing when it quit on me this last time).

Thanks for the help everyone.

well, I recently ordered from provantage, a usb 2.0 card for 11.64 and the sony flash hvlf1000 for 84.00. Im sure the have notebook HDs so im probably going to order from there. Thats one of the few sites my mom lets me use her credit card for online.

I believe the X-Drive disk must be 9mm high - which is a very thin one.. You might want to bear that in mind.

will older 5 gb notebook HDs work? I think its 5600 rpm.

Depends if it's 9mm high! 2.5" HDDs vary between 9mm up to 12mm I believe. Obviously 9mm drives are more expensive (they're incredibly thin if you have one in your hand), so not all notebooks will come with them. Also, 12mm is more than ample thickness for a lot of notebooks.

Having just checked, X'S-Drive disks need to be 9.5mm, NOT 9mm. Sorry for the confusion.
