This might be one of those divisive threads that causes all kinds of snarky comments and eventually get locked. We'll see... ;-)
It seems to me there's quite a gulf between basic and advanced editing in terms of what you can do. In basic, you can't do any spot editing. In advanced, you can do that plus you can use all kinds of filters, HDR, Virtual Photographer etc.
Is it me or is there some scope for middle ground here? Perhaps an intermediate editing ruleset, where minor cloning, dodging and burning is allowed?

Would be nice to see dodge/burn in basic editing as basic really cripples b/w photography without those tools, but you have to draw the line somewhere and I'm pretty happy with where the line is currently drawn. |

Advanced is the intermediate when you consider that expert is in the mix also... |

I think it is hard to draw a clear line through the middle ground. I have sympathy for the idea, but the line ends up being pretty much totally subjective and nearly impossible to define/ communicate and adjudicate.
I'd be happy to be proved wrong though, if you feel like writing some clear, concise rules that define it.
