I'd really like to make a website but my skills in this area, while existant, are lacking. This is what I'd love to put together:
- an easy-for-me-to-use gallery
- other pages like information and instruction pages
- ideally a way they could upload photos right there at the site (hidden from other users) (possibly with a size and pixel restriction?)
- a contact form (to use in addition to an email link)
I'm a little bit overwhelmed. The first one, there's a gallery software I've used before and liked, but I get confused on how to work that into a site (instead of it being the entire site). The third and forth points I'm just clueless about.
To top it off I'd need to have people be able to pay and I don't know (yet!) what to use instead of Paypal (or maybe Paypal's okay?). It'd be awesome to be able to have people pay by credit card.
So yes, a bit overwhelmed. :-)
Any help would be awesome.
EDIT: I shouldn't say in the title that I'm "looking for" all of it. I'm posting this not to get help finding out all about everything and what exactly I can do, but mainly just to know if it's possible. If that makes sense.
EDIT AGAIN: Everything would need to be free.

I noticed this in my travels last night maybe it can be of use to you?
Web Design Templates
I've never used them, but noticed that they had Joey's photos on the site!

Ohhh! That reminds me of something really important I should have said.
It all needs to be free. I don't have the money to pay for website design.
That link is awesome though. Such pretty stuff.

When you say ideally a way "they" can upload photos, who is "they"?
Whats the overall goal of the site?
Here is a great little script you just plop in a directory on a web server running php, into the same folder the images are in and it creates a slideshow.

I know a lot of people dont like paypal but ive never had a problem. People dont even need an account with paypal to pay you with a credit card by the way. |

There are solutions out there for all four things you mention, putting them together nicely will be the problem. And as always: The easier something is to use, the less flexibility it offers. There's software you can operate with just a few clicks, but you'll get some standard design. Or you could customize everything yourself by writing code...
The best solution I can recommend that meets your criteria (easy interface, free, etc.) is the following: Get yourself a geek boyfriend who'll take care of it. ;-) |

You are, by the sound of your post, going to charge people for something. It has to do with photos. Pay someone to make your site for you. That way it will run smoothly(profesionally), you will be able to roll it out sooner and you can concentrate on the business you will be doing. I am always amazed that someone wants to futz around learning things that takes time away from their real "paying" business. Why spend your time learning something that, in the long run, is not going to add to your profit? Sure, it takes an original investment to have someone build it for you. But you wouldn't think of going into any business without some sort of investment, would you? |

Kaveran: Visitors to the site upload the photos.
Kaveran and xianart: I'll check out the links you mentioned, thanks.
Sam: That's exactly what's overwhelming me - putting it all together :-)
pcody: I don't have anything to make an original investment with. I'd love to do what you suggest - it's a fantastic idea - but I can't. I know that professional, paid-for products work much easier and with far less hassle in general than what I am looking at, and this is part of what overwhelms and (a little bit) frustrates me.
In any case, just knowing as you said that "there are solutions out there for all four things" - I guess I did know this but it helps to hear from someone else that what I want to do, if difficult, is at least possible.
Thanks everybody :-) |

Another thing I forgot to mention:
I already have a domain name and hosting thanks to an arrangement with a friend a couple years ago. Yay! :-) |

Do you know if I would need a special account for that? 'Cause that'd be pretty awesome. |

I really don't want to say... I feel like even though I'm being optimistic and I'm going to try hard this probably won't work out, and then I don't want to have told people. I know it's stupid.
edit: And yes, I know that being optimistic and feeling like it won't work out seems like a contradiction. I'm very complicated. *rolls eyes at self*

Well, its tough for people to offer a solution when we dont know what you are doing. As someone who knows php/mysql/htlm/css pretty well (I turn away business doing it weekly) I would buy a premade, off the shelf script for running a stock site before I spent the time creating my own. |

It may not seem like it at all, but this has actually really helped. I now have a concrete plan for what to do next, and that is SO good as far as the overwhelmed feelings go.
Thanks, everybody. :-D
If the project does get off the ground I'll be sure to come back and let everybody know what it is :-) |
