Missed yesterday, so catching up.

Another shot from the sidewalk in Austin. He started talking to us in the bright sunlight, but was happy to jump over into the shadow of a building for a few more shots. Really interesting, expressive face. Fun guy, big smile. The road and buildings behind me are in full sunlight, bouncing around. He's got a off white wall behind him, but I exposed for his face. Wanted him out of the sun to get some light in under his hat.

My goodness, there's some great stuff in this Thread. I'm having a wonderful time looking at it all. Oh yes, the above is my 'second best' shot of yesterday because the other one just may end up in Free Study.

I got a kick out of this comment left by Gordon and thought I'd share:
Photography is 1% inspiration and 99% moving furniture. - Arnold Newman

The lighting setup for this one is a cheapo DIY setup you might enjoy:

- a white sheet draped over an ironing board, at the camera's right
- a set of $30 1000 watt worklights, aimed at the sheet, reflecting the light to the subject
- subject is sitting on a black futon - $20 =)
- a good bit of color correction in PP (for the color version) because of the harsh tungsten cast

I'm a little behind :(. I took this one yesterday. The picture is not as sharp as I would like to have it. Maybe more USM on it?

Thanks Brandi!!

Another one from last week. It was a mostly cloudy day, but with light, bright clouds acting like an overhead global soft box. Beautiful light. Putting everything out on white crushed rock really helped too, to bounce more light around. This one for me exemplifies the Arnold Newman quote from above, too.

With such a liberal set of rules, I procrastinated of course. So anyway, here is #1.

Great expression to go with a great story. Fantastic idea to take the photo in the shadows so you could get a good exposure on his face.

Well I am way behind and the chances of me catching up are slim. So I am going to try and submit one or two a week until the end of October. I have enjoyed everyone's photos so far. I am trying to leave comments as I go. This is nothing exciting. It is not studio or natural lighting but it is lighting. I held the camera against the pole, set the shutter speed and left everything else auto. Cropped it down tight to get rid of some distractions.

Day 8 - Seattle City Hall. The red tinge is natural.
70mm, f5.6, 1/320s, -.3 EV, ISO 100

Mid day sun coming in from the clouds. Walls are translucent. Triangles were created from the door entries from the angle of light. Not much of a setup. Stand in the corner and pop off a shot. Just some sharpening in post.

Hello all I know that I said I would like to do this challenge, but sometimes life gets in the way. I have sought and have been given some great advice about lighting and have applied it to my most recent challenge entries and after some things slow down a bit I hope to post some other images.
What I have seen so far posted here is wonderful and reading the steps and seeing some of the setups helps loads so keep up the great work.

MAX!

Day 7:

One from a wedding this weekend. I thought it fit in this thread because of directional lighting.

I'm enjoying this thread - I'm hoping some of it sinks into this thick unyeilding "too old to learn new tricks" head of mine. Gordon, you have some phenomenal stuff and I REALLY appreciate you providing very clear descriptions of what you're doing and how. Unfortunately, I cannot get to your flickr folder, either due to interminably slow connections or, when at work, site blockage. Any chance you'd be willing to stick stuff in a portfolio here?

Something a bit different this time.

Quick setup in the kitchen. Silver reflector very slightly to camera right, high, with an SB-28 @ about 1/4 power, triggered by pocket wizard. 85mm f1.8 lens, ISO 250, f4.5, 1/250s. The whole point is to use the specular reflection of the umbrella in the reflective wood behind her head to provide some separation, at the same time as the umbrella providing the main light. So the angles are important.

Set things up, shot a couple, adjusted exposure by changing the f-stop and ISO and then just talked and shot a few frames. Camera on tripod. Talking key to getting a moment worth capturing.

Sorry, no. I have little enough time trying to keep one portfolio organised and it's a mess

Standing under a white tent outside Austin City Hall. Beautiful, even, glowing light. Brightly illuminated, sun-lit white tent above us, orange/white stone all around, great light bouncing from every direction but we are both in the shade. Background is in full sun so blows out when exposed for her skin. Huge catchlights from the brightly lit plaza that we were standing on.

All available light, no modifiers (unless you count the big white tent, plaza, windows on adjacent office buildings etc, but I didn't bring those with me ;) )

A note to people who are punting their lighting descriptions because they're outside. Gordon shows you how it's done!
