Been eyein' up this old barn lookin' for the right excuse to stop and check it out. I could tell it was going to be interesting 'cause it's been falling apart for years. Brilliant midday sun leaking through all the holes.

Window light. Got him to stand quite close to the narrow, small window, camera right. The background wall was purple, which I wanted to play off the orange top. Turned him enough to the window to get the ratio across his face that I wanted. Window was facing a clear, blue sky, with the sun on the other side of the house, so no hard light (or shadows)

No other modifiers, room lights were off, walls are dark. A bit of bounce/ fill from a white bedspread to camera left and below.

The back wall is lit from the window essentially in the opposite direction to the light on his face - the camera right corner is in the darkest shade, while his face right is closest to the light. The left wall is in more window light, while his face on that side is in more shadow. Gives a subtle chiaroscuro lighting pattern for a bit of depth.

Lots of good pictures posted in this thread. I've enjoyed looking through them.

Here is a senior, he was a little tough but I felt like some of his true self came through. (Hopefully his mom will feel the same!)

Day 6 - Oh My ....!

I've been REALLY studying why my images don't work with flash etc.

Strobist has been a great starting point as has many of the resources that stem from that site.

I've also been watching YouTube about lighting and flash - lots of fabulous resources available.

Anyhoo - I FINALLY 'got' what fill flash was/is and how I can achieve it - phew!

As yet don't have an off camera ability to flash (coming soon), but I decided to see what my on camera flash could achieve - Whella!

My son outside at 4.30pm the sun was behind me but mostly hidden by clouds.

Used my on camera flash and this came out - got some other really fun images - the kids think it's VERY COOL that they are flying - GRIN!

ISO 400 (accidently - again !!!)

Tried my hand at a semi-official portrait shoot for some parents of the kids at Boiling Springs High School. 4:00 P.M., in the shade off to the side against an innocuous green bush. I was pretty happy with this shot.

Here are my 4 missed shots... all taken on one day as I haven't had much time for light capers... Anyhows, here we are. These are all from a trip to an island with some colleagues.

Yesterday evening was the first time I had any time to go and take photos this week. I took a number of photos all at the same location within a time frame of a bit over an hour. All photos were processed in Adobe Camera RAW, zero spot editing. I have caught up and I am a bit ahead as I will also not have much time this coming week.

I really liked the play of shadows in the foreground. Wish I had gotten more of that, but the moving, bouncing vehicle I was in had different opinions.
:-))

Sidewalk in Austin, about 5pm. Mix of broken cloud and sunlight overhead. I asked him to step over into the open shade for this shot.
