Maybe this idea has popped up before, but I was wandering if a text box could be added on the submission page, just like aperture, shutter speed and ISO. There are a lot of SLR users today and not all of them state which lens they used for the submitted shot. I, for one, am very interested in what lenses people use for their shots and would very much like a more detailed info on each one.

Does anyone share this view?

It has come up before and the general consensus is that it would not be a great idea... I'm sure that any photographer here would share that info with you if you ask.

Probably. It would be very nice if people would take 2 secs to put it in the description box, I would at least be thankful.

I like what you have done on your last few submissions John, including most of the exif info in the comments field, great for curious people like me!

I hear ya. I always try to give the specifics of my shots in case someone wanted to know how it was done. It annoys me when I'm wondering how a shot was done and all I see is nothing in the comments and nothing in the shutter, aperture, and ISO fields.

Are we talking just focal lengths, or do you include manufacturer, IS, USM also?

The more the better for my parts. It only takes a couple of seconds, no time compaired to the effort of each shot.

I don't understand why not?

me either. why even ask for shutter speed, iso, or f-stop then? The focal length is just as important! ;D

for one it's a good idea if the users can then sift through images sorted by lens. Al-a-photosig.com If your wondering what the lens is like it can be very handy.

Some are concerned that once the image is cropped then the lens info isn't meaningful. The focal length info certainly would be potentially confusing.

I am curious how many people actually crop images that they are submitting - I've gotten to the point were I basically try really hard to get it right in camera, so find that I seldom crop any of my photos other than for aesthetic reasons to do with the ratio.

I know others crop almost everything they enter - I once got disabused of this idea by a successful stock photographer. So anything I shoot would potentially be useable for print purposes, because I aspire to not crop anything

Well Gordon since I got my 10D I haven't cropped and now know it annoys me a lot to hear my photo is "too cropped". I too aspire to never need to crop, and feel you don't learn this by cropping :)

It's become the same for me. The only time I crop anymore is for a certain aspect ratio.

Edit: I'd like to see a lens field and/or focal length.

I wasn't particularly going for focal length (although I wouldn't say no!) I was going for the lens itself. For the sake of one text field that you can leave blank if you want, I think it'd be worthwhile. I'd like to know what lenses people use for wideangle/macro/studio/etc shots. There's so many lenses out there it would be nice to know what other people use and for certain types of shot to help me when I'm considering what to buy and use.

Quite agree. That is one thing DPC teaches you, the 'Ah I'll crop it later' attitude. :-)
