Ouch! Another one bites the dust (and I thought this one was very nice - and done without filters, thank you). However, someone left me a wonderful comment (and a 9 vote). It makes me feel so good that someone appreciated it.

A comment and a 7 to go with it made my day when I logged on a few minutes ago. It's still clunking along in the mid 4's for me. This is the wierdest challenge for voting and for voters knowing the details of the theme. The theme is more like a concept than a solid item, so it is letting each voter interpet what's good thru their own experiences and knowlege.
To me, the challenge is so different that it almost seems ok to bomb on votes as long as there are a few who like the image.

I Realy hope this challenge is won by someone that created a technique when taking there photo,(as per the details for the challenge) and not one that has had something applied after. Photograph:Picture made by the action of light on a sesitive film (censor) Photography: the art of TAKING photographs.

To be fair, the challenge details doesn't specify one way or another. We were meant to study up on impressionism techniques and try to "incorporate" that in our finished product, if you like. I think we all need to just take a step back, breathe deeply, and take another look at the entries without any biases to either in-camera or ps filters. |

And to be fairer the details do specify what to do, and when you have learnt them to incorporate them into a photograph,(Picture made by the action of light on a sesitive film (censor) Photography: the art of TAKING photographs. nowhere does it say to add a technique to a finished product, whats the point if you use someone elses ideas, and that is what is happening using filters.

Answer: every effect was done in the camera except #4.

Answer: every effect was done in the camera except #4.
#1 and 2 were zoomed during the exposure.
#3 was handheld for 1.5s at 280mm without zooming.
#4 was a sharp shot originally over which I laid a "find edges" layer.
#5 was taken with a point and shoot, and I just turned the camera while the shutter was open,
Apparently voters over the past several hours have liked my shot better - the last 24 votes have averaged 6.0 and the comments have been incredibly positive and detailed.

Aren't you doing that when you add vasoline to a filter? When you shake the camera? |

Ooooooh, there's an icon for that? LOL |
:D, the closest I have come was 2, but that was before the icon. |
That is probably the coolest award out there. It's funny that it's hard to read the text on it. It's like trying to read the text in your 0 comments. :P
ETA: Closest I've come is 1 comment. |
That's because the person who added the text stinks at graphics stuff in photoshop. The image itself is a art roflmao creation.

I found this challenge to be quite exciting and mind boggling at the same time. I went out to take photos and this wasn't really on my mind but when I got back to the computer I was inspired by what I had photographed. I searched online to see what is considered impressionism from both paintings and what professionals sell as photo impressionism.
I printed what I had chosen to submit then went to the bookstore to see if anything fit, Impressionism is vast and varied. I saw something that clicked and...
I submitted my photo and got my first comment. I was blown away by the insensitivity of the commenter. Still am. Oh well, I must grow a thicker skin. |

You're preaching to the converted, but I respectfully add that nowhere does it say that techniques MUST be incorporated in-camera. And, judging by the entries in the last challenge, it seems the use of ps filters is acceptable. At the end of the day, simply judge an image on whether it has successfully convinced you. If it does, vote highly. If not, vote down :) |

Welcome to DPC (that's sincere, not sarcastic)!
But yes, to survive here, you will need a thick skin. Make it thick enough not to get upset at negative comments, but no so thick that you can't absorb the nugget of truth usually present in all but the really ridiculous.
From your portfolio, you seem to have some nice stuff. I like Donkey Beach. :)
This challenge seems to be bringing out extremely strong emotions, so the negative comments may carry extra zing.

Thanks for the welcome! And the comments on my photos. I really appreciate it.
Yes there usually are nuggets in the comments. The strong emotions and comments are useful as long as they are constructively administered.

Originally posted by riversong: Well, I'm coming along and giving you guys great scores, because these images are so PRETTY!
I love this refreshing challenge, I guess because I'm was an artist long before becoming a photographer, so I have the correct eyes to see color, balance and the play on light. Impressionists were the first artists to actually think to go outside and paint in real sunlight, which is why lighting is so important, and fast strokes of the brush.
Overall....I'm very impressed with everyone's images and also saddened to hear about all the low scores. Such a pity people can't appreciate the different look in this one itty-bitty challenge. I'm loving your images. Maybe folks will 'lighten' up a bit before the voting is over.
Some of these images lost their photographic quality and are taking on the real look of a painting. Interesting to observe how art plays out differently over the ages. I am not concerned about the crossover...if you all knew how many painting are hanging in galleries across the world...due to having a computer and doing what you guys are doing and then they paint the photos and sell them in galleries as painted artwork, you'd be amazed!
Of course...I'm old-fashioned and prefer to do my paintings without the aid of effects on my computer.... sorry to ramble, but please don't be discouraged, your images rock and you should be proud.
In fact, I've seen 3 images from this site painted and hung in our local art gallery over the past 5 years. Researching images to work on a painting is how I came about this site to begin with! You guys should be worrying about artists that might snatch up your PP image and paint it for big bucks!! |
Thank you for your comments on this challenge they are truely inspiraitonal. |

No That is creating a technique and taking your photo using it and will show in your original, filters will not. |
