To me, that is a risky proposition. Right now, the data is there, and accessible. Depending on what the data is worth to you, it might not be out of the question to spend the money on GetDataBack and another 80GB drive to ensure the recovery.
Attempting to "repair" the data (by writing to the damaged drive) could actually put the disk in worse shape and make less of your data recoverable, depending on how messed up it is.
I guess it is an assessment that only you can make.
{edit to add}: You can get a 120GB Western Digital 7200RPM hard drive and an external USB2.0/Firewire enclosure for $139. External hard drives make great portable backup devices that you can connect and disconnect when needed. (Beware that even a FireWire drive is slow compared to an internal IDE drive, but still plenty usable.) Or, get a 200GB Western Digital 7200RPM drive for $100 after rebates.

You make good sense :)
I'm just thinking this process through entirely from start to finish before I even attempt to recover the drive and directory structure.
I will probably wait until my main computer is back up it is much faster than the Win 2000 machine, plus it has 1gb of memory.
This could be a lot better than even restoring what I have from CD.

I can just picture y'all cruisin' down the highway singing The Hunting Song.
External hard drives are so big and cheap now they make a most practical backup; considering the work (time/labor) involved, even DVD media is pretty expensive when you're backing up tens and hundreds of GB. |

Calvus,
Sounds like you're making progress. Glad you found a "restore" process that would work.

I tested several programs and the best one I found was "Stellar Phoenix FAT" for most OS systems.
It was kick butt good :) It has a front end like windows explorer, scans the bad drive, and creates a tree of the directories and files to restore. It also had the option to select or unselect deleted files and creating a file filter with dates and etc. I found that the deleted files were nothing more than what I had cleaned up previously.
I started the restore right after purchasing the program online and I received the key file to go ahead. It restored approximately 37gb in just around 2-3 hours.
The purchase was some what of a nuisance but it worked! and did not take hours to scan the drive. Some programs I tested were going to take like 12-20 hours and some crashed and could not read the drive at all.
With Stellar you have to scan the bad drive, purchase the program ($79.00), get the machine code it generated during the scan and email it back for the key file to restore the files. It is good for one year and can run only one one machine. But heck they want several hundred or thousands of dollars to do this professionally.
Still working on the setup but atleast I'm getting there :)
I still can not figure why the system crashed. There is no evidence of virus or etc. The MB supports the 80gb drives. I think it must have just fouled up after a recent crash/lockup.
I push my machine to hard at times with working on the very large PSD files (10-40mb) and etc, and having to many programs running.
Well got to get back to work :)

Could you get me some diet coke?
I'm looking forward to going to Fossil Rim. The problem is that my family is a one car family. Is there someone going that might be willing to let me ride. I'll be happy to chip in for gas etc.
Thanks

You can hitch a ride with Danny he is going right past your area.
Or can have someone drop you off at my house (Mesquite)?
either way.

If Danny is willing, it would be eaiser if I could just hitch a ride with him. I'm only about 1/2 mile east of Central in Plano.
How about it Danny?
I'll be happy to chip in on gas etc.

The more, the merrier. Though there is a requirement that the least experienced photographer in each car has to bring a steak in their back pocket.
