pardon me for saying, but most modern (newer) Point & shoot cameras are hardly "crummy". they are just, well, compact...

LOL, yes i don`t think the camera had much to do with this photo.

no, the camera wasn't used for the zoom blur!

This wasn't entered in a Challenge, but I think it's a pretty darn good photo and the technical quality is good enough to have won. The photographer isn't good enough to win a ribbon though ;) This was taken with a Kodak 5MP camera that you can get used on Ebay now for about 30 bucks.

I really wanted to get a ribbon with my cellphone camera just to make a point but unfortunately it doesn't have exif data. seriously, it's not about the camera people, especially for the small sizes we put up on the web.

It is possible to win ribbons with any camera. But having the correct equipment can give you a better chance in many genres and that's why people spend thousands of dollars on bodies and lenses.

Being able to pick and choose lenses is a huge advantage over the majority of pocket-cameras. In trying to use my wife's new point and shoot, I had a heck of a time getting focus in any circumstances where there wasn't a great deal of contrast. Many of these cameras don't have any type of manual focus. There are manual settings on some of them but many are very limited. Adding a lens or filter might be an option, on some but not all. I know it IS about the photogrpaher, but good luck getting shots with details and sharpness like this with a point-and-shoot:

Yes - at first i thought this was a point and shoot ;) but it was "shot with [his] new Canon Rebel XTI camera with a 100-400 Canon zoom lens."
